Hi!

I'm looking to begin applying to Business Schools next winter to begin school Fall 2012. My target schools in order are:

HBU
Columbia
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Loyola Marymount, part-time (safety)

Demographics: African-American.
First Generation College Student.
Just turned 25 years old, would be 26 at matriculation

Undergrad: 3.23 GPA, California Polytechnic University, Pomona. B.S. Finance. Also, an A.A. and an A.S. from Riverside Community College.

GMAT: Still studying and still to take Manhattan GMAT Prep class, but 690-720 should be the range with higher Quant score than Verbal. Test date is July 1st.

Work Experience
After Undergrad (08') became a "Management Trainee" for ITT Technical Institute. After 22 months (this past October) was promoted to "Director of Finance" where I manage finances for the campus I work at (mainly accounts recievables, budgeting, forecasting, managing direct reports) and also manage the day-to-day operations of the Financial Aid Department and its employees. Also one of the founding members of the Management Trainee Mentor Program for newly hired Management Trainees within the company.

Goals after school -
Complete career change as I fear the "For-Profit" Education Sector is in trouble due to increasing government scrutiny. Interested in Investment Banking & Hedge Funds.

Don't hold back, let me know what you think my chances are.

Thank you :)

If your GMAT ends up where you hope it will, you would have a chance at all the schools on your list, but they are all highly competitive programs. I would probably drop HBSfrom the list. With the exception of Loyola, there are no safeties. You may want to consider applying to a couple of additional programs where your chances are at least slightly better and which would assist your transition to IB if you aren't accepted to your top choices.

Best,
Linda

Mixedin86,
I just wanted to suggest a few other finance programs and options for you to consider.
First, there are less competitive MBA programs strong in finance (NYU, Cornell, Simon, and Georgetown, for example).
Second, MSc in Finance programs will get you in the door to the best global financial institutions. Those programs are usually 1 year in length and students tend to be younger (as you are) so you don't need to prove as many accomplishments and impact as you would need to for the MBA programs.

Hi, urarunner. My biggest question is what's with all the education? In other words, your biggest challenge is going to be proving that you need the MBA (at 30 years of age you are beyond their typical student's work experience), and even more that it makes sense for you to pursue it immediately after the MSc in Finance. If you are able to prove these points and your interpersonal abilities, then you stand a chance at the programs you named.
