Hi,
Can you please evaluate my profile. I have only recently started thinking about getting an MBA
Background: Male, 22 year old (too young?
)
Nationality: Indian
Undergrad: graduated in 2016, from a UK Russel group (tier 1) university in aerospace engineering (grade - 2:2. stretched myself too thin
). Also won a scholarship for all 3 years of UG studies
GMAT: not yet written (exam due in Jul 2017)
Work Experience:
started and successfully ran an internet-based company in London (during 2nd year of undergrad) for 1.5 years -> had to stop and return to India due to visa and personal issues
started a food and beverage company in india -> still going strong (almost 7 months)
internships in financial services
currently working on starting an internet-based company
currently working on starting a fashion photography studio
currently preparing for CFA level 1 and GMAT
Community:
started a sports club during undergrad studies, part of leadership of 2 other societies during undergrad studies, volunteered at a local non-profit organization during undergrad studies
promoted from a teacher to a board of director at an Indian non-profit -> still going strong (8 months)
Post-MBA goals:
get into IBD (M&A, haven't decided on the market sector, mostly tech) in the US as an associate, alongside start an internet company -> after - either progress asap to an MD position or move into venture capital (after 1-3 years of M&A exp)
Other:
online courses from top-institutes in finance, accounting, digital marketing, and business strategy (through coursera)
extensive travelling (almost all of EU, a few ASEAN countries, and India) -> self-funded
involved in combat sports (wrestling and mma)
learning russian
Universities: IBD (M&A) target schools in the US
Other questions:
1) Would schools consider a candidate at such a young age?
2) Any chance of scholarships
3) Any tips on how to improve my profile?

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you’re quite the serial entrepreneur, which is very cool
In general, entrepreneurship experience can make for a great story in terms of leadership and impact but in your case, I think you really need more time. With only 7 months of full-time work experience, it will be really tough to present sustainable results, showcase perseverance and grit in overcoming challenges (which are inevitable in entrepreneurship, as I’m sure you know!), and prove that you have the same maturity and breadth of perspective that someone with 3 or 4 more years of professional experience may have.
Then the next question I have is “why do you want to get into investment banking?” On the surface this seems like a pretty big switch from what you’ve been doing. I’m also a bit perplexed by why you would want to start another entrepreneurial venture at the same time (you’ll be working crazy hours in IB!) There’s nothing wrong with all of this but you’ll want to develop a clear reasoning for why IB and how that fits into your long-term plan. Again, I firmly believe that giving yourself a few more years to work, either on your businesses or in a job more closely related to finance, will really give you the room to clarify your goals and develop a real thesis on how you'll leverage the MBA to achieve those goals.
Without a GMAT score or a crystal ball to see into the future of your professional endeavors, it’s hard for me to really evaluate your profile for the top MBA programs in the US. Your undergrad GPA is a bit on the low side but that’s something that you could help mitigate with a strong GMAT score and possibly some of the additional coursework you’ve completed. You community involvement seems solid – so keep that up and continue to make an impact.
So to get back to your questions, I think it will be very tough to apply to the top MBA programs with your current profile. I would advise you to wait a few more years and come back with a much stronger application. When you do apply, I see no reason why you wouldn’t have a chance at scholarships, although that will ultimately depend on which schools you apply to and how competitive your application is (i.e. applying to a less competitive program with a top-notch GMAT score / stellar essays / etc. will have provide a higher chance of receiving a scholarship than HSW). In terms of what you can do to improve your profile, I think my feedback above covered it!
