So after college I didn't really have any stellar extra-curricular activity. I did some things but never really had time to gain any leadership roles etc. The reason being, after I graduated, I received an AA degree on something I thought i wanted to move toward. One job later, I realized it wsn't for me. Thus, for one year, I was a full time student + held a full time job and had no time to do anything else. After that, I was busy working on a real estate degree (which I received) and hoping to get into that as a side job. My question is, should I expalin that in my optional essay as the reason why I didn't have time for extra activities after college. Or would it look bad because despite the AA degree and two years in the other field, I decided it wasn't for me. Would that work against me? I did learn alot through the AA degree and that industry, and could potentially use that knowledge for my long term career.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Even if you didn't explain the reason for your lack of extracurriculars, you would need to explain the AA and real estate degrees, so why not do both at the same time, maybe in a brief optional essay. But don't expect that this explanation will get you very far: a lack of extracurriculars is a negative and the only 'excuses' that probably matter are health or family crisis issues. It might help if you could show them evidence of your extracurriculars (a) during college and (b) since earning the real estate degree. This would show that you do get involved when you have the time.
