Graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in CS a couple years ago, had some family issues during undergrad (parents were very sick and constant hospital visits) and I did crappy in undergrad.

I failed 2 courses but I cleared them both and one of them I got an A on my second attempt. Whats worse is that I have some Ds, specifically in a second year statistics course and and a D in a calculus course. Upward trajectory though, cumulative gpa is a 3.1, but last 2 semesters are 3.9 and 4.0 respectively.

I knew I had to kill the GMAT so I got 770 (50Q/45V/8IR/6AWA). Trying to get into a top school, ideally HSW, but we'll see. I work at Amazon as a Software Developer and I'm going to apply next year.

Should I take a calculus or statistics class from a community college to build an alternative transcript? I want to show adcoms that undergrad isn't a good reflection of my ability since I was going through some stuff. I'm already kind of burnt out from studying for the GMAT and taking 2 courses for an alternative transcript is going to be a bit of a drag. I only want to do it if it makes a big difference. I guess my question is if my high GMAT score makes up for my crappy college transcript or do I need to do more to convince adcoms? Should I retake the GMAT for an even higher score?

Hi RemoteLychee, I love that name!

My take is slightly different than BB's.
I agree that your GMAT score is solid and that's a great effort by you. Also, your reasons for the lower GPA during college seem valid enough. When you were presented with an opportunity to do better academically, you did just that (the upward trajectory and the A grades in the failed subjects).

That said, quant heavy subjects like calculus and stats matter to b-schools and a few of the MBA programs also ask applicants to study these courses pre MBA (quoting from Wharton's website- If you have not already taken calculus or statistics, it will strengthen your candidacy to do so before you apply. You can take whatever course is most convenient for you.).

As you are not applying this year, I will suggest you take one course. In comparison, I think retaking GMAT would be a waste of your time- you already have an outstanding score.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for this! I think I could take a course, but do you recommend any particular courses that adcoms at HSW would look at favorably? Additionally the cost of the course is also a factor for me, so I'm wondering if there are such courses that don't cost too much, but will get the job done? I've heard some good things about MBAMath, but I don't know if HSW even know about this program.
Am I better off taking a free MOOC on Coursera or something?

A certificate course from Coursera or MBA Math should help. How about doing the course from a community college or programs such as UCLA extension? I hope other experts chime in on this as well, as these are the only options I am aware of.

Hello RemoteLychee1727,

Given your very strong GMAT and upward trajectory, I would not worry too much about your performance in undergrad (particularly because you had a very valid reason to be distracted from your studies and Tech is also a tough school). Your role at Amazon will help too, since a position at such a reputable company lends itself to your success. Of course, you will also have to show how you specifically have been successful and demonstrated leadership here.

Do you have a particular round you plan to apply in? If you are targeting round 1, at this point I would not recommend spending any more time or money prepping to get an even higher GMAT. A 770 is quite impressive as is and you should now focus your efforts on articulating your goals, developing your essays, selecting/preparing your recommenders, etc. Plus, once at 770 there is a limited benefit in increasing your score.

Low undergrad GPAs can be tricky but Personal MBA Coach has worked with many applicants in similar situations who have gotten into top programs by acing the GMAT, having impressive experience, and building compelling personal stories. While a class could help you here, I think the best thing to do is to focus on setting yourself apart from the crowd and sharing how you will add unique value on campus.

Feel free to visit our comprehensive services to learn how we can help and reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com if you are looking for customized support throughout the application process.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

PersonalMBACoach Thanks for this. So I'm actually going to apply in 2 years or so - I just wrote the GMAT earlier so I could get it out of the way. Since I do have 2 years left, I guess I'm wondering if my time would be better spent building ECs and essays or would an additional course help at all?

In two years' time, you can do both :)
