Hi Alex,
I am currently working as a Vice President in my family owned business (though I have worked almost 5 years with a fortune 500 Company). My questions are:
1) Do i need to mention in the resume that the company is family owned or just mention the company name without bothering about the family part? does it matter? I work on salary and can produce the docs.
2) My goal is to make a career into Real Estate finance. I plan to do my MBA and work for a good Real Estate services company at first. the confusion starts here: after working for that company I am not sure whether I want to continue with the same company or return to my family business or associate with other people with similar interest and float an altogether new company. I will be able to decide the long term goal only after doing my MBA and working for some good company. Will mentioning the point that I may return to my family business work against me?
I dont want to sound as a confused candidate in front of the adcoms. I am sure about my career into Real Estate but not sure which turn I might take in future. Can you help me with the safest bet?

Whether you choose to mention that it's a family business or not is really a personal decision -- in any case, if the nature of your responsibilities and achievements are strong, it really shouldn't matter whether it's a family business or not (assuming the business is managed and operated by professional managers - even if some of those managers are family members).
As for your goals, it's really hard to say - there isn't some one-size-fits-all answer to what is clear or not clear. That's something you'll have to figure out as you write the essays, and go through them one draft after another.
