Option C, "the way the academy thinks about the Civil War," is the most accurate and appropriate choice because the historian's new evidence has already had an impact on current thinking and understanding within the academy, rather than potentially changing future thinking or allowing for multiple possibilities of how the academy could think about the Civil War.
