It depends on two things:
1. pre-preparation
2. your application execution speed.
Your GMAT score will be a key factor in deciding where you should apply. However, there are some components of the MBA application which are very crucial, but they don't need to wait until you select your business schools for applying. Gettting these out of the way will help you be more organized and you can submit atleast about 3 applications in R1, depending upon the deadlines. Better still, taking a consultants help will give you access to a structured procedure and expert guidance on execution.
So here's what you can do before getting the GMAt score:
1. Prepare a strong, one-page resume. This is a requirement at every business school, and you'll need this when you connect with current students and adcoms on profile discussions. An eye-popping resume can make your profile memorable, but it takes multiple iterations to build. So, nail this one now, before essay writing begins to crush you.
2. Start your career goals essay. Your entire application, be it your resume, essays or recommendations, centres around your goals as you'd want to highlight those skills that are relevant for your future goals. Every school requires it, whether they ask for a 100 word answer or a 500 word answer, or at the time of interview. Start working on this now!
3. Solid MBA applications are not just about essay writing. They require intense background work before you can start writing mind-blowing essays. You should build your b-school network, talk to students and alumni, get the intel on job prospects post-MBA and other important information that helps you show your fit with the b-schools. This needs to be done now and not when you are rushing against time to complete your applications.
So, you can still apply for R1 deadlines with proper time management, discipline and a detailed plan in hand.
