Being the first generation in the US is rather common, but being the first in your family to go to college is something business schools would want to know about. But it only helps you a modest amount and then only if you "do" something with it -- i.e., incorporate it into the theme of your essay, etc.

I just wanted to get some clarification on something as someone who is only in the early stages of considering going for his MBA. When I read "First Generation" applicants being an angle, do we just mean first generation as in your parents weren't born in the US or first generation in that your parents didn't go to college. My parents didn't go to college , is that actually a factor? This is obviously a minor part of the application process but I'm just curious.
Thanks!
