MAZ,
I think you have been misled, or at least been given incomplete information. A move to research can definitely add a wrinkle and is often a good springboard to an MBA, but it all depends on what your goals are and how that path connects to those goals. The great thing and I suppose maddening thing about the MBA process is that it doesn't occur in a vacuum. It's all context, matching person with program and hitting the timing just right. It's why I make a good living doing this!
The same is all true for your GPA, by the way. Certain things can mitigate it, including selecting the right programs, setting the right goals, showing the proper work experience, etc. But the biggest thing is how you present your story - can you showcase discipline, maturity, and focus the belies your underwhelming performance? If so, and the school is willing to eat the number, you can have success. If not, you might as well just shut it down no matter what job you take.
It's a complex process and it is hard to give you a bit sized answer. Hopefully there's some help somewhere in this rambling thought!
Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti
