Four students from Mistville and four from Fogtown will attend school in New York City this year, and each group will rent an apartment.

Type A apartments are each 1,390 square feet, have 2 bedrooms, a 10-by-10-foot kitchen, and are 4 miles from the school. The price per square foot per month is $1.94.

Type B apartments are each 1,250 square feet, have 3 bedrooms, an 11-by-11-foot kitchen, and are 3 miles from the school. The rent is $2,250 per month.

Type C apartments are each 1,210 square feet, have 2 bedrooms, a 7-by-9-foot kitchen, and are 4.5 miles from the school. The rent is $2,190 per month.

The Mistville students choose a type C apartment and the Fogtown students choose a type A apartment.

Assume, for each group of students, that the group's choice of apartment type was based solely on an accurate assessment, using only the information above, of which apartment type met a particular criterion listed in the table. For each group, select that group's criterion. Make only two selections, one in each column.

When you first read the question, ignore the details of the apartments. You will anyway not remember them. Focus on what you need. 
 M students chose apartment C and F students chose apartment A.

We are given that their decision was based on one criterion only.

Why would someone choose C? It is the cheapest. Calculate the rent for apt A and that comes out to be 1390*1.94 = 2697 (use calculator)
Do we need to worry about any other criterion here? No. Because this would be a valid answer for sure so nothing else can be valid. 
 ANSWER for M - Lowest rent

Why would someone choose A? It has the greatest square footage 1390. (compare vertically to save time)
We do have that option in the table. Great!

what is the difference between "lowest rent" and "lowest price per square foot"? They sound similar to me. Please elaborate on why A and not E for Mistville students

Rent would include the area too. So, it may be lowest rent but not the lowest price per square ft. Say, one apartment is of 1000sqft with rent 2000 $ and other 500sqft with rent 1500 $ => Here, rent is higher for 1000 sq ft apartment, but the price per sq ft is higher for 500sq ft apartment ( $3 per sq ft as compared to 2 per sqft for the other one)

Type A (4 miles) is not the apartment with the fewest miles from school. Type B (3 miles) is closer.

Therefore, “Fewest miles from school” cannot be the criterion for choosing Type A.
