Given that p = 996, which of the following best approximates the value of p/(3p−1) ?

A. 1/8
B. 1/6
C. 1/4
D. 1/3
E. 1/2

As this is Approximation Question, We can Approximate P to 1000
So, 1000/((3*1000)-1) ~~ 1/3

Answer D

Took a different solution to the above posters...

if p=996, then 3(996)-1 will be some very large number. Subtracting the one, in an estimation problem, is negligible - it won't have a huge impact either way.
That leaves us with the fraction 996/3(996).
The 3 can be factored, leaving us with 332/996.
Now, 332/996 is very close to 333/999. And that is very close to 1/3. So the best choice, would most likely be D.
