GMAC Buys an Indian Test provider...

Question

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), US-based administrator of the GMAT exam, is trying to strengthen its foothold in the Indian business school admissions market. GMAC has announced it will assume ownership and management of NMAT exam meant for admissions to Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies ( NMIMS).

Looking at GMAT Volumes that seems to be a statement not in touch with reality since recession usually drives tests up.

It's about time! I strongly resent the current selection methodology for business schools in India. This is a good move.

I have given this test (scored in the 99th Percentile) and was admitted to the program

:D NMAT was previously organized by pearson vue and conducted by Narsee Monji itself, but the quality of the centers was not at all upto the mark. Lets hope that improves now.

I second you, but I do not think this will change any thing.
The schools have to change the selection methodology. This will just change the test ans the selection will still be on the basis of the score obtained in NMAT by GMAC.

We need to change the fundamental selection procedure, where marks of a test and even worse, marks of the HSC and SSC do not play this big a role.

This is the reason why premier B-schools such as IIM ABC all have a class where in more than 50% of the class have 0-1 years of experience. But yes they are studious and nerds and geeks. Don't know what they would contribute to the class.

I just hope that GMAC suggests them a change in the selection procedure also.

I've interacted with over 30,000 engineering students over the last three years and for most of them an mba or an mtech is an extension of btech.
I'm for mandatory work experience.

Same here. MBA is just the next logical step after BTech in India for the students and the only thing every one keeps in mind while applying is the salary (I have nothing against the students, because they know hardly anything just fresh out of Engineering) There should be a big overhaul in the selection criteria. In India, a poor soul who wants to do an MBA after 5 6 years of his work experience has a close to impossible task to get 99.5% percentile in the CAT. Where as is is quiet possible for a student in an Engineering college owing to more available time and less responsibilities. And if you have less marks in HSC and SSC due to any reason, you are doomed :D

And what astonishes me is the fact that the B-Schools here are fine with the stats of the incoming class.

same here. Got 98.XX in NMAT and got call for NMIMS core and did't take it up. NM is viable for less than 3 years.
