GMAT 580 profile evaluation

I am working in a non profit and looking to do an MBA from a top 20 school. I gave my GMAT a week back and scored a disappointing 580 Q42 V28. This was my worst score ever in about 12 tests. I am thinking I should give it again since I know my range is higher.
How much does no profit background help in getting admits at top schools. Does it help from the diversity factor or does it work against due to schools not considering it as strong a background as a corporate? I know I need to score in high 600's atleast to get in a top 20 school but what is the leverage I have with a 4 yr. non profit background, a bachelors in computer engineering and a masters in management with a 3.75 GPA?
Also, with a score of 580 what type of schools can I get into in fall 2015? in northeast US?
Thanks a ton.
