So I gave my GMAT yesterday and got a score of 760. But my Quantitative is very low. Its 48 (73 percentile). My verbals 47. Which I think pushed my score high. I am absolutely shocked. Well I did have to guess the last few questions. But even then the score is bad.
I need some advise here. I am planning to apply to the top five B schools. But I have heard they have a 80 percentile cutoff for Quantitative. I wanna know how strict they are about that. Does anyone have any idea? I mean I do understand that there are a lot of factors, but my questions is..is a low on Quantitative a strict no-no?
I am confused about retaking the test. What do you think about that. This was my second attempt and I had scored 710 (Q 49, V 38) two months ago.
I am really confused and any help will really be appreciated.
TY.

You will definitely not be tossed out just because of your quant score. You got a fantastic score on the GMAT and that will certainly be taken into account. While I don't know everything about you to give you the best advice, it would be hard to advise you to retake the test with your experience.

What kind of quant background do you have?
What do you do for work?
Undergrad school and GPA?
Extra-curriculars?

Now its about telling the right story to support your scores and maybe emphasizing analytical abilities. Congrats on the good score! If you want help crafting the rest of your application, let me know! [email protected]

Thanks Scott for the reply.
To give a brief background. I did my Bachelors in Chemical technology in India. Then did my PhD in chemistry. I have been working in research for a while now. My undergraduate scores were good (no GPA system). But I would say I was in the top 5% of my class. My GPA in graduate school is 3.45, which isn't great either. I have a decent extra curricular. I was part of two student bodies in graduate school. One was an NGO working with grass root organizations in India. I also headed a project there and I got some funding for that project. I am also currently working for a venture capital firm as an analyst doing life science research for them. But that is unpaid and its more like and n internship experience. I was also part of the cricket club in grad school. I was part of the team and I played in the state league. My graduate school was medium tier. No Harvard or Standford. So yeah thats that. I m not sure how much importance schools place on Q scores.
Well I do understand that I have a slim chance.

Thanks for the details. What specific school did you go to in India? I'm very familiar with the schools there so this will give me a better idea of your background.
How many years of full-time paid work experience do you have? I don't see anything mentioned here about that.

Good question...the application process is very holistic so there are very few automatic disqualifiers. Not specific to the GMAT although your Quant score by itself was not in the 80th percentile you have achieved a score well above the averages at your targets by a considerable margin. As an Indian applicant you realize how competitive the process is so scoring above the averages almost a necessity to compete at these top schools. Without knowledge of much of the rest of your application the GMAT should not be an area of concern for you. Focus on creating a compelling application that highlights why you are a unique and deserving candidate.

Hope this helps!

Retake?!?!? With a 760!?!?!
Naaah, just celebrate! The score is far more important than the split, and you are 30 points above the average of the best schools.

You are golden.
