A. With exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies, severe shortness of breath is caused, weakening the pulse and often leading to a loss of consciousness.

Incorrect verb usage.

B. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies causes severe shortness of breath, weakens the pulse, and often leads to a loss of consciousness.

Incorrect S-V pair

C. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies cause severe shortness of breath, and often leads to a loss of consciousness, weakening the pulse.

The exposure does both, however here the effects are disjointed.

D. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies often leads to a loss of consciousness and shortness of breath, weakening the pulse.

E. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies cause severe shortness of breath and a weak pulse, often leading to a loss of consciousness.

Distorted meaning.

2. To the production of histamine by antibodies

Expert's Global Official Explanation

Meaning + Grammatical Construction + Parallelism + Subject-verb Agreement

Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of this sentence is that exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamines by antibodies cause two things, severe shortness of breath and a weak pulse, and in doing so, they often lead to a loss of consciousness.

• The introduction of present participle ("verb+ing"- “leading” in this case) after comma generally leads to a cause-effect relationship.
• Two singular nouns joined by “and” form one plural noun phrase.
• If a phrase shares a cause-effect relationship with another (or is subordinate to it in terms of importance), the phrases do not maintain parallelism.

A. This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “weakening the pulse and often leading …”; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies that severe shortness of breath both weakens the pulse and often leads to a loss of consciousness; the intended meaning is that the exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies cause severe shortness of breath and weaken the pulse, and in doing so, they often lead to a loss of consciousness; please remember, the introduction of present participle ("verb+ing"- “weakening” in this case) after comma generally leads to a cause-effect relationship.

B. This answer choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun phrase “Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies” with the singular verbs “causes”, “weakens”, and “leads”; please remember, two singular nouns joined by “and” form one plural noun phrase. Further, Option B incorrectly maintains parallelism between “causes severe shortness of breath” and “weakens the pulse”; please remember, if a phrase shares a cause-effect relationship with another (or is subordinate to it in terms of importance), the phrases do not maintain parallelism.

C. This answer choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun phrase “Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies” with the singular verb “leads”; please remember, two singular nouns joined by “and” form one plural noun phrase. Further, Option C alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “cause…and leads…”; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies that exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies both cause severe shortness of breath and often lead to a loss of consciousness; the intended meaning is that exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamines by antibodies cause two things, severe shortness of breath and a weak pulse. Moreover, Option C further alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “weakening the pulse”; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies that leading to a loss of consciousness and shortness of breath weakens the pulse; the intended meaning is that severe shortness of breath, alongside a weak pulse, leads to a loss of consciousness; please remember, the introduction of present participle ("verb+ing"- “weakening” in this case) after comma generally leads to a cause-effect relationship.

D. This answer choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun phrase “Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies” with the singular verb “leads”; please remember, two singular nouns joined by “and” form one plural noun phrase.

E. Correct. This answer choice correctly refers to the plural noun phrase “Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies” with the plural verb “cause”. Further, Option E correctly uses the phrase “cause severe shortness of breath and a weak pulse” and the “comma + present participle ("verb+ing"- “leading” in this case)” construction, conveying the intended meaning of the sentence – exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamines by antibodies cause two things, severe shortness of breath and a weak pulse, and in doing so, they often lead to a loss of consciousness.

E is the best answer choice.

Hi Bunuel correct answer is showing as D. I was desperately waiting for the OA for this question.! Please look into the same.

With exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies, severe shortness of breath is caused, weakening the pulse and often leading to a loss of consciousness.

Solution:

Please correct me if my explanation or reasoning is wrong.Bunuel ExpertsGlobal5

After reading the sentence, I did not properly understand the cause and effect or what causes what or leads to what. Though after answering the question correctly, I did read the official explanation. But I am not convinced of the intended meaning. I don't understand how can we correctly infer that the two things mentioned cause severe shortness of breath and weaken the pulse and in doing so, they often lead to a loss of consciousness. To me, any combination of the three things happening could be okay. Though I am not a doctor, to me, severe shortness of breath could weaken the pulse, as in it makes sense.

A. With exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies, severe shortness of breath is caused, weakening the pulse and often leading to a loss of consciousness.:" Starting sentence with "with" seems to make the sentence a bit ambiguous. Does the with modify Severe shortness of breath(noun), or is caused (verb)? Also, if something is a trait or universal truth it's better to say that it causes that trait rather than the trait is caused. No major issues but still makes the sentence less correct.

B. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies causes severe shortness of breath, weakens the pulse, and often leads to a loss of consciousness.: S-V agreement issue. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies is plural, whereas the verbs used are singular.

C. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies cause severe shortness of breath, and often leads to a loss of consciousness, weakening the pulse.: S-V agreement issue. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies is plural, whereas the verb used "leads" is singular.

D. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies often leads to a loss of consciousness and shortness of breath, weakening the pulse.: S-V agreement issue. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies is plural, whereas the verb used "leads" is singular.

E. Exposure to certain allergens and the production of histamine by antibodies cause severe shortness of breath and a weak pulse, often leading to a loss of consciousness.: Correct

Hello behlmanmeet,

We hope this finds you well.

Having gone through the question and your query, we believe we can answer your doubt.

The meaning error in Option A comes from the parallelism between "weakening the pulse" and "often leading to a loss of consciousness"; this parallelism implies that these two actions are equal results of "shortness of breath" taking place. However, shortness of breath by itself is unlikely to cause a loss of consciousness; by contrast, a weak pulse can easily lead to a loss of consciousness. Thus, it is more logical to list shortness of breath and a weakening of the pulse as two causes for a loss of consciousness than to mention shortness of breath as a single cause for weakening of the pulse and leading to a loss of consciousness,

Aside from this point, your reasoning here is perfectly correct. Kudos!

We hope this helps.
All the best!
