Proposal X received 20% more votes than Proposal Y. So,
X = Y + 20% of Total Votes – (1)
Y = TV – X
Putting the value of Y = 70 and substituting the value of X from Eqn 1
We get TV (Total Votes)= 175
So, the number of votes X received was = 175-70 = 105
So, the difference between the votes for Proposal X and Proposal Y = 105 – 70 =

Proposal X = x votes
Proposal Y = 70 votes

(x-70)/(70+x) = 0.2

x = 105

Y proposal loose by 35 votes

Proposal X received 20% of the total votes more than Proposal Y
Total votes= 100%
This means X received 60% of the total votes and Y received 40% of the total votes.

Y received 70 votes.
Then,
40% of Total =70
=> Total = 175 votes.

=> X received:
60% of 175= 105 votes

=> Y lost by = 105-70
=35 votes.

Proposal Y= Y
Proposal X= x

x= 1.2% of y

20% of Y is the difference by how much x was more than Y

20% of Y = 14

so the answer is A

X+Y= Total votes
0.2*Total votes + 70 + 70 = Total votes

Total votes = 175
No of votes Y loses = Total votes - y votes
= 175-70
=105 votes
Hence, D.

Let's assume votes received are x and y respectively
Total votes = x+y
According to the question
x got 20% votes of the total more than y, so

x = y + (x+y)*0.2

substituting y = 70
x = 105

y lost by x-y=35 votes

Proposal Y received 70 votes, and Proposal X’s edge amounted to twenty percent of the entire vote. In numerical terms, that margin gives X a total of 105 votes, so Y’s 70 votes fell short by 35.

Total votes, T=x+y.
Given, y=70.
So, T=x+70

Also,
\(\implies x=y+20\%T\)
\(\implies x=70+0.2(x+70)\)
\(\implies x=84+0.2x\)
\(\implies x=105\)

So, the number of votes Y lost by = 105-70 = 35.

Let total votes be T.
We know that X got 20% of T more than Y,
-> X = Y + 0.2 T.
But X + Y = T,
-> T – Y = Y + 0.2 T
-> 0.8 T = 2 Y
-> T = 2.5 Y or 2.5 x 70 = 175.
Then X = 175 – 70 = 105, so X – Y = 105 – 70 = 35.
Proposal Y lost by 35 votes

Proposal X must be 60% and Proposal Y must be 40%

if 40% is 70, then 60% is 60*70/40=105.

105-70=35

Let total votes = v
Proposal x received 20% more of the total votes than y: x = y + 0.2v = 70 + 0.2v

Total votes = X + Y = (70+0.2v)+ 70 = 140 + 0.2v v=140+0.2v
0.8T = 140
v= 175

x= 175 - 70 = 105
Loss margin = 105-70 = 35.

Given that, X received 20% more voted than Y.

so, X = (120/100)*Y
X = (12/10)*y

Also, given that Y received 70 votes

So, Y=70

therefore, X = (12/10)*70
X = 12*7
X = 84

now, we need to find the difference between the votes received for X and Y,
So, Difference = X-Y = 84-70 = 14
Difference = 14

If there were only two proposals & one of the proposals received 20% more votes than the first proposal, then if we consider the lower % proposal Y to be x% & the other one be (x+20)%.

The sum total of both comes out to be equal to 100%, hence x+x+20=100.

2x+20=100
2x=80
x=40

So Proposal Y received 40% of the votes, which means that

40/100*Total votes = 70
Total Votes = 70*100/40 = 175 votes

Therefore Proposal X received 175-70=105 votes. This means that Proposal Y lost by 105-70 = 35 votes

The correct answer is option (C) 35

Let me solve this quickly:
Proposal Y got 70 votes.
Proposal X got 20% more than Y.
20% of 70 = 14
So Proposal X got 70 + 14 = 84 votes
Y lost by: 84 - 70 = 14 votes
Answer: A. 14
