Total time = t
Leo at 36.
Marco ate 30.
What is 30/t ? I.e. what is t ?

Statement 1: Won't get us t.
Statement 2: Won't get us t.
Combining the statements as well won't get us t.

Hence answer is E.

In a hot dog eating contest, two participants, Leo and Marco, competed for the same amount of time. During that time, Leo ate 36 hot dogs, and Marco ate 30 hot dogs. What was Marco’s average rate, in hot dogs per hour, during that time?

(1) Marco’s average rate was 6 hot dogs per hour less than Leo’s.

(2) In the first 20 minutes, Leo ate 12 hot dogs.

Correct answer is D.

Let the time for which Leo and Marco compete is t

Statement I:
36/t - 30/t = 6
From this, we can get the value of t and Marco's rate = 30/t. Therefore, sufficient.

Statement II:
Leo eats 12 hot dogs in 20 mins or 1/3 hrs.
Leo will eat 36 hot dogs in 1hr.

Since both compete for same time
Marco's rate = 30/1. Therefore sufficient.

From the question prompt, we understand that we need to find 30/t, where t is the time taken to eat 30 hot dogs

Statement 1:
We get 30/t = 36/t - 6, where t is the time taken by Marco and Leo, as they took the same amount of time.
We can get 't' from this equation, hence, sufficient.

Statement 2:
We know that in the first 20 minutes, Leo ate 12 hot dogs.
Now, the remaining 24 hot dogs were eaten in how many minutes?
Say 40 minutes, then the total time is 60 minutes, then Marco's average rate would be 30 hot dogs per hour.
If Leo ate the remaining 24 hot dogs, in say 20 minutes, then the total time would be 40 minutes. Then Marco's average rate would be 30/(40/60), 45 hot dogs per hour.
It's insufficient.

Option A: Statement 1 alone is sufficient.
