Triathletes learn to swim, cycle, and run as straightly as possible in a line to conserve energy, a major concern on a course that extends beyond 140 miles.

the correct answer is B,
we can eliminate all the answer with straightly ,therefore A and D
run in as is wrong
therefore choice C and E are wrong
we are left with choice B

as straightly.... is not correct usage so ELIMINATE A and D

Next split is whether to include an undertaking that is or not. Now imagine the sentence without that part:
It mentions that ...learn to swim, cycle, and run.... to conserve energy, a major concern. This makes it feel that learning to swim, cycle and run is a major concern, not conserving energy, which is why adding that part is important so ELIMINATE C

Between B and E, obviously E sounds more correct and hence is the answer. ELIMINATE B

Answer - E

ANSWER C

Core sentence: Triathletes learn to swim, cycle, and run in a straight line to conserve energy.

Key split: in a straight line vs as straight/straightly in a line. Here I would choose the first one in a straight line. It's simpler and concise. A, B and D are out.

Between C and E, the modifier "conserving energy" can be compared to "major concern" directly

Hence C

Split #3: the absence or presence of an undertaking that is

Nothing separates (C) from (E) other than this extra bit tacked on to the end of (E). Is it necessary? Ask yourself what is a major concern and supply the answer that each sentence suggests. The correct answer should reveal itself.

Q: What is a major concern?
A: To conserve energy. (Answer choice (C).)

Q: What is a major concern?
A: An undertaking. (Answer choice (E).)

Answer choice (C) is much more direct, while (E) focuses on a process that requires further explanation. The extra words simply are not warranted, and we can safely choose (C).

Hi AndrewN

"a major concern" is a noun modifier that should modify a noun.
In choice C this noun modifier does not modify a noun but rather modifies a purpose/verb phrase i.e. to conserve energy.
In choice E, this apparent error is done away with by introducing "an undertaking", which is a noun and which unarguably refers back to "to conserve energy".

As per my experience, on GMAT, correct answer choice includes extra words such as undertaking, phenomenon, situation, circumstance, practice and the answer choices that do not include these extra words are incorrect compared to these extra words answer choices.

Request you to revisit this for the betterment of all. Thanks.
