I don't think it works like that. Both exams are drawn from the same set of questions and use the same adaptive algorithm. I scored more on the in-person test than the online GMAT.

Thank you.
Was it a meaningful difference? Do you mind sharing the difference in points such as Q went up two points or verbal went down three points?
We have a lot of people speculating about GMAT online being harder than the impersonal test and vice versa so any data points are really helpful in clearing out misinformation.
I scored 720 (Q49 V38) on the online GMAT and then 760 (Q50 V44) on the offline version.
To be completely honest, the questions were a little easier on the online GMAT but that was most probably because I answered questions correctly more consistently on the offline version (Verbal - 75/100/100% accuracy in the first 3 quarters and Quant - 86/100/86% accuracy in the first three quarters) and therefore got to solve more difficult questions on the offline version.
On the online GMAT, at one point I thought I must have messed up the test because of the level of quant questions I was getting. The offline questions, in comparison, seemed harder. But like I said, that must have been a function of my performance on the test. For Verbal, on the offline had a couple of really difficult SC questions but apart from that the level was pretty much the same on both tests.
I don't think there's any difference in the difficulty level of the two tests if one is performing at the same level in both. What people should really focus on is whether the offline GMAT, with the extra break and the choice to choose the section order, gives them a palpable advantage.
