GMAT - Quant Resources

Question

Hi All,

Took the GMAT recently and Scored a 630 (Q-44, V-33); Looking to improve my score to a bottom line of 710. Could anyone please help me identify resources which i could use to improve my  Quant  score to 48-50, band? Trying to look for a comprehensive question bank focusing on the "Harder/700 level" questions.

Hello Samarth,

A score of 630 is decent and a target score of 710+ seems realistic.

A couple of things that can be a noticeable barrier to achieve your target score would be some or all of the below.

• Inefficiency by using time-consuming Conventional method to tackle DS and PS questions still
• No expert support (maybe) who can tutor, analyze, and guide you during your learning especially on hard level questions while stably hitting middle-level questions.
• Lack of many updated questions and practice in the recent exam trend
• Not well aligned with time to solve questions.

We would recommend you make a note of various possible combinations of your target score. The possible scores will help you track your performance after taking the mock or practice test. It will also help you maintain balance in both the sections, and you will always be in a great position to allot the study hours to a specific area accordingly.

The possible score combinations for 700 or 700+: Q should be Q 46, 47, 48, and V should be V38, 39, 40.

To raise this 630 to a 710+, you will almost certainly have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

GMAT Quant tests only specific types of questions from each topic. So, if you know those question types and how to solve them in the right way, then you will most likely score well. But, you have to make sure that you use the right methods and strategies to avoid the traps set by the test makers, mainly in DS questions. You seem to be good with the concepts. You just have to start focusing on the methodology to solve questions. You might understand it a little better by going through the recording below.

And now how to choose a resource?  
When you choose a resource, make sure to choose one which helps you with the right aspects for your GMAT preparation. As GMAT mainly tests your application skills, the resource you choose must help you with:
  Concepts 
 Methodology (Very important) 
 Practice questions 
 Their detailed solutions

So, you first learn the concepts of a particular topic, then learn the methodology to solve questions of that topic and only then practice questions to solidify your learning. This is how you go about your GMAT preparation. The resource you choose must make your prep a lot more structured and effective.

And one more important thing to look for in a course is the  study plan . To make your prep effective, you need to be really consistent. So, a study plan will help you to be consistent. Having said that, you cannot follow a study plan which doesn't suit you. For example, a person who can dedicate just 3 hours a day cannot have the same study plan as a person who can dedicate 6 hours a day. So, the study plan has to be  personalized . And it has to help you  work on your weak areas .
