Thanks in advance for your help. I have a GMAT question, yes you guessed it
I scored 700, which i am proud of. I think its a competitive score that puts me in ballpark of top 10 universities. The break up however concerns me a little - Q45 (78-percentile) and V40 (90-percentile). It's a general perception that top 10 schools like at least 80-percentile on both sections. Does a 78 on Q work against me or is it not a big enough deal. I have BS and MS in Civil Engineering. Undergrad - 72%, graduate gpa - 3.8
Took four math classes during undergrad and scored C, A, A, and B grades. I have 5-6 years of experience. I can write strong essays and will get decent recos. Is it worth trying to increase my Q score. I know i can do it but not sure if a 730 with a greater than 80-percentile on Q helps me over my existing 700. Any help will be greatly apprciated. Thanks.
jatt,
The 80th percentile is not a hard and fast threshold. Keep in mind also that schools see many high-quant low-verbal GMAT scores, but fewer cases like yours, where the verbal is higher. I think they favor your group, especially in your case where your undergrad major was quantitative and you did well GPA-wise. This shows them that your GMAT quant score was not an indication of quant weakness. No need to retake unless you have major negatives elsewhere in the app and want to compensate with a higher GMAT score or you're sure you can get higher and have the time to retake.
Good luck,
