GMAT Score 640 , Should I retake GMAT. Please suggest

GMAT Score 640 , Should I retake GMAT. Please suggest [#permalink] New post   02 Jul 2013, 02:42
Hi All

I appeared for my first GMAT exam last week and scored 640. During practice tests , I never scored above 570 , but individually had scored a maximum of 48 in quant and 35 in verbal.

My test results were 48 in quant and 30 in verbal.

MY profile is as below
2 years work experience in Pre- Sales ( Design Technical Solutions for new bids ) and have engineering background.

I am also currenlty pursuing masters in Cybersecurity and will finish it soon.
and have 5-6 IT certifications .

I am targeting universities around top 20-25 . Please suggest should I reappear for a better GMAT score.

Hi,

If you are targeting top 20-25 b schools then I would suggest you to retake GMAT, given you have 2 years of work experience which is considered quite low for the top 20 b-schools unless you have convincing story to write in your essays focusing on leadership abilities, team handling and building skills, achievements at work place, good extra curriculars, strong academics, awards and recognition. I would suggest you to start your application preparation parallel to GMAT and target 700+ in your next attempt. All the best!! Let me know if you have any questions...

Hey there,

Unfortunately, the answer is yes - retake the exam. Let's ignore for the moment your work experience is below the lower end of most schools' ranges. Far more qualified applicants than you with more years of experience have significantly higher GMAT scores than you.

For your applicant profile, you have to be playing 700+, preferably 720+. If you aren't, then your story needs to be so unique and amazing that it makes up for the fact that you are below the average for your profile. Since you're in presales in the IT industry, you can't go that route.

Therefore, a higher GMAT is table stakes for you.

On a side note, be careful how you utilize your IT certifications in your story. In some cases, you may be better off not mentioning them at all but that will vary by story and school.

Hmmmmmmmm, to reach top 20 schools, you need a 700+ probably...

Depending on your academics a high 600 score could get you into the 16-20 but like the others have said you need to retake the test.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your advice. Finally planning to appear for GMAT again in 4-5 weeks time.

While preparing for my First attempt , I noticed that my RC and CR 's score weren't great.

For Quant , I think I struggled a bit when it came to 700+ questions on Coordinate , Probabilty and Statistics.

Please suggest on how I could work on these areas.
