I would try and defer you are a very unique candidate given you are both a woman and African both relative minorities in the admissions process. I would apply R1 next year whether you can secure a deferment or not from CMU. It is a great program particularly for tech but I think you may be able to shoot a little higher

If you can get your GMAT to a 730+, I would go after a targeted set of higher tiered schools in R3 for sure. Haas and Anderson would be great options for you as would Kellogg. Best of luck on your GMAT! Let us know if you'd like to talk about school selection if R3 becomes an option for you!
