What are you doing your Masters in right now? I could see this being a problem if you're doing an MBA but if it's another master's program I don't see a conflict, however I defer to my colleagues on this.

I am not in class anymore, and it was an MBA. I did one year of classes that just ended, and finished my job with the university. That is why I am concerned, having started an MBA, I am unsure if I can get into a top 20 school now.

Yes I see now. I haven't dealt with this many times before, so hope others respond, however keep in mind that some people actually get an MBA and then redo that MBA at a more prestigious school later down the line. You're not going to be able to transfer anything however I'm not sure this would preclude you from admission to a top program. That said I would most definitely address it in the optional. You want to articulate why the program you were attending at that point was not fulfilling your needs and why the program you are applying to does.

bvrew13,
Starting an MBA but not completing it is not a deal-breaker as far as top MBA admissions offices are concerned. You would need to explain very clearly and compellingly your reasons for enrolling in the MBA program you're aborting and also why it doesn't help you achieve your goals. That said, if you're aiming high you will be competing against folks who have not made any 'missteps' and have less to 'explain' so in that sense your aborted MBA may hurt you (for example, by casting a shadow on your career planning skills). So you will want to have a very strong profile with some 'extras' that compensate for the aborted MBA. Feel free to send me your CV for a closer look: paul@admitify.com.

I have a passion for basketball and got a job coaching a D1 school, but eventually left. The school required me to be in a graduate program and I thought I may as well sharpen my business skills as I majored in finance in my undergrad. I had started a job, and am interested in getting my MBA to further push my career in a desired direction, but am concerned that because I have already completed 1 year of coursework I will be denied at any top 20 school I apply for. I am currently working FP&A for a F500 company, and would like to move into IB/PE work, but am limited with my background which is why I want to obtain an MBA. Any thoughts on whether that would still be possible at a top school?
If you were working as a basketball coach at a D1 school AND doing the full time MBA at the same time, there may be more here that you can do to help....

First, since you did not finish the program- you have some leeway in how you handle this on the resume. I would lead with the work experience you have now and in education I would list your degree- the undergrad one you have. Since you were working at this time also- you have no real "gap" to account for so I would downplay the aborted MBA in what you highlight on resume
Then for when you list the transcripts where the school will see that- just address in the optional essay something like you did above-
you were really coaching basketball and you needed to be in some kind of graduate school. You took the business classes- but realized you wanted more from MBA- decided to start working and now that you have more finance experience you want an MBA where you can fully concentrate on that and help position you for the MBA.
I worked on the admissions side at UNC Kenan-Flagler so I can give you some insight into how schools would view this. I generally did not like to see another MBA- BUT and this is really important- everyone's situation is different- and the story you tell above makes sense- you did not really know enough at the time to get the MBA it was more for the basketball coaching- you learned some but realized you wanted to work first. Now you have and know you are ready for a more rigorous MBA. I think that story flies... and it is the truth. Don't let the "what people say" keep you from pursuing this. But I do agree that for this some good coaching to make sure you present this in the best light can help. So if you'd like to work with us to help you manage your story and make sure that is not what adcom gets hung up on when reading your materials, we can help with that. I think you will be able to apply, just will need to provide some clarification to admissions. My brother is also a D1 coach and was a grad asst so I understand your experience. I think as stated above you probably will not be able to transfer anything over but you may be able to place out of the core.
