Hey all, hello.
Though this is my first post, I've been surfing these forum pages for a while now. Gmatclub has been an important asset for my studies. Well, I feel like I should start my first post with some thanks. So, thanks to you all.
I'm facing a tough decision here. I would like to hear your opinion. My concern lays whether this decision will make it easier or harder for me be accepted in a Top 10 B-School.
I will start with some background. I'm Brazilian, mechanical engineer, 25. I graduated top 5 in class at a Top 5 Brazilian university. I'm planning on starting my MBA with 27 (Class '17). Post MBA goals are Education Management or Management Consulting, long-term goal is to start my own business.
Until May '13 I was working as a Senior Strategy Analyst in the world biggest educational group (13k employees, $ 5bi mktcap), HQ at Sao Paulo. Inside the company, it was a prestigious position with a nice salary and lots of interaction with the company's CEO, VPs and board. I was really happy with my job and my superiors were glad with my performance.
In May '13 I lost my mother in a really subtle manner. As my mother and father owned a small business (we are in the market for 15 years now and we currently hold ~80% mktshare) and taking care of my two small sisters (4 and 8 yo) is really demanding, I had no other option but to quit my job, move back to my home city, to take care the kids and run our business. It was a tough choice but I don’t regret it. Currently, we (our family) are doing fine, business is going super (in 9 months I could increase our profits by ~25%). Besides that, I’m studying for the GMAT. I feel like my job here is almost done, my father can run our business alone.
Before joining the educational group, I used to work in a high tech startup (in my home city). It was a really technical job and I did fine. But after a financial crisis, they fired me (that was when I decided to move to Sao Paolo and seek greater opportunities).
Recently, this same startup approached me and made me a nice job offer. (Note: it is hard to say whether the term Startup still applies for them or not - the company grew a lot and it is doing great). This is not the first job offer I received since I came back, but certainly the first that drew my attention.
Some info and insights about the job:
• The job deals with applied engineering concepts (not related with my mid/long term career goals, but which I domain due my previous experience)
• I will manage a team of (reasonably to highly) capacitated professionals (that’s a first for me – within our family business I don’t really get to manage people)
• Immediate superiors are CEO and CTO
• Nothing indicates that the company can or will sponsor my MBA
Well, you fellows think that taking this job will help me on getting accepted to a top school?
How will the admission boards see the fact that the same startup that previously fired me invited me back for a more senior position?
Should I stick to the original plan and keep running our family enterprise?
Guys, any thoughts on the matter are helpful. If you read it ‘til here, huge time thanks!
Cheers!
