Re: Has anyone scored 800 in gmat? [#permalink]
Well, I can't remember where I read it, perhaps one of Sandy's threads on Business Week before that site went by the wayside, but somebody (very authoritative I know) said that an 800 throws up a red flag at Stanford. The 800s mostly bombed the interview because their 800 was a function of their relative weirdness, which came out in the interview.

Though I haven't yet applied to schools (I am this fall), it appears as though you just need to check the proverbial box with the GMAT. You just need to demonstrate that you're smart enough, not the smartest person in the world. Over and above is nice, and helps with scholarships and potentially getting the initial interview, but by and large GMAT scores take on this uber-significance because they are the only metric that each candidate has in common. Unlike law school admissions, which are just a raw numbers game (LSAT + GPA = your chances), business schools appear much more holistic. Through some unscientific formula, ADCOMs are giving points for your undergrad if it's an exclusive one, the selectivity of jobs you have, performance, extras, etc.

My buddy's roommate at HBS was an 800 GMAT guy. They graduated a few years ago. He said he was just naturally brilliant and pretty much coasted through school.

My cousin attended HBS with a 790. He still tells me he could have got a perfect score and he probably would if he wrote it a second time. He 'messed up' the V section... he says... lol

No matter what people say about astronomical GMAT scores - its a sign of nerdiness, a possible indicator of imbalanced social skills etc... I just think 800 is an incredible achievement no matter what.

More power to those who can get that score. If this world was completely fair and objective and only reliant on pure cold, calculating technical skills, 800 GMATs would rule this world!

Stanford's Classes of 2011 & 2008 both have 800 GMATs: https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/admissi ... ile-p.html

Yes!!!! I did!!!!!

For Quants the last questions was a DS one for programming a space rocket to fly using only the math tools of linear algebra and the weighted average theorem.( I think that the NASA people do not know this cut through solution for their job. . . )

And for verbal section the last question was the below CR question:

Yes or no??

a) Yes.
b) No.
C) Maybe.
D) Yes, if in the case that I had knew the whole discussion I would have answered Yes.
E No, if in the case that I had knew the whole discussion I would have answered No.

After answering the last question the computer started smoking . .and a Matrix like code started showing on my screen and finally the score appeared after 1 minute. Then the supervisor of the test centre started setting up the printer in order to be able to print the digit 8 in the first place of the score. .( it was not necessary up until then . . . )

By arriving home I got an e-mail from the PhD of HBS assuring me that I have a place in their 2013 class.
I rejected the offer because I wanted a MBA degree instead . .

HI,
I got 800 in 2010 ( Q:52, V:51) .
if any one has a specific plan can get it , it's not difficult .

1.) Unless, you aren't uploading/mailing proof no one's going to believe you.
2.) And you face a risk of getting warned/banned by the mods.
3.) I am one of them.
4.) And I'm a bit touchy about people getting more than I did on quant

Lol. Count me in. I am touchy about high verbal scores. :-)

And I don't think 52 is possible in the quant. So prove us wrong!

I generally don't indulge in these things, but I'll sort this out for you.

for 1.) That's a perk of being a moderator. You could have timed your GMAT that way, you know, be a mod first, then take the GMAT and then, write I got 810.

+ I'm not a grammar nazi, but I don't get a chance to correct a V51 every day. So, here goes:
You're = You are. You are not that good, you are wrong etc.
Your = possessive. Your attitude, your GMAT score, your post etc.

Anyhow, on a more serious note, we don't allow people to post random things on threads without backing up their claims. We intend to keep this place clean and we will welcome if you could alleviate our apprehensions. PM me or any of the active mods if you need any help with that and until then, your further posts on this thread will be deleted.

Thank you

This was unnecessary.

Thank you ashkank for your input. I had little choice but to deactivate the account. You won't be bothered by us again.
The curse of the 800 seems to continue to plague some people. Good luck to you and hope you live a hundred years.

Perfect scores raise red flags. Just recently I read a story about a guy who took the test for other people for nearly 6 years before he got caught. In 2 and a half years he took the test 212 times.

I have a friend who got a 790 with a 6AWA and got rejected by the 4 schools he applied to, depite that score and a 3.9 gpa. It was most likely because he had no work experience (applied right out of school) and was pretty much very one dimensional, complete academic. I read his essays they were very well written but there was no substance to them since he really had no experiences outside of the classroom and clubs.

He ended up getting a Phd in math instead.

I'm guessing the guys who scored 800s had a very similar story. Not enough work experience, not enough extracirriculars, and mediocre essays.

Work ex is probably the most important criteria.
