I am about to graduate with my Bachelor's is in Business, however I do have minors in Finance and History. I am about to start my MBA in Finance in the following semester. I am looking into the Finance and Accounting world and a lot of companies state the requirement of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics. Being that my degree is only in Business, will my MBA in Finance "trump" that Bachelor's requirement or should I add the additional 24 semester hours I would need to add an Accounting or Finance major? I wonder if a company will look for that foundation education or be more impressed with the MBA? Any help is truly appreciated! If I do need to go back and change my degree I'd rather do that now than regret it later.
Good question, WesGrinstead - and congrats on your coming graduation!!!
Different colleges offer different majors. Typically a business administration degree is considered relevant to a formal accounting or finance major (we assume you took many of the same courses as you would have in one of those other tracks). Your current plan of getting an MBA in Finance is also going to give you the sufficient background needed for a career in that field. We believe you're going to be just fine with what you're doing now - though you should certainly be talking to your career counselors on campus about your options and plans too! In most cases, what an employer writes up in a job description is their ideal, and few people are a complete match to a req. You can always indicate the relevant coursework from your undergrad major in a line on the resume if you want to call attention to those specifically.
Hope that helps!!
