Hello there! I was wondering if I could get a few opinions about how to improve my chances for HBS or Stanford as a 2-year deferred MBA student straight out of undergrad.
Here's my profile:
Age = 21
Gender = male
Nationality = USA
Undergrad school = UVA (in-state, on scholarship for entrepreneurship/leadership)
Undergrad major = music
Undergrad GPA = 3.9
GMAT= 760 | 6.0
Full time work experience = 0 years (a current senior)
Work experience positions:
- Classical musician in an internationally-known symphony orchestra (the type that is featured often on CBS, NBC, CNN, BBC, ABC, etc.)
- Started mobile tech customization business with 40k annual revenue
- University TA teaching african music and dance traditions
- Network administrator for faculty and staff members
- Managed summer orientation program at UVA for incoming students
Activities = local city symphony orchestra, african music and dance ensemble, percussion ensemble, new music ensemble, classical composer (currently completing senior thesis composition), snowboarding, motorcycles
Miscellaneous = rare psychological condition that offers a unique perspective (literally), love for trading (active trader of personal account with a great and verifiable track record), and a heavy of computer science background
While I am a music major, I've taken lots of quantitative courses, like advanced mathematical modeling, differential equations, calculus 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2 (for majors), neuroscience, microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial accounting, and intro to business
I see two possibilities for my career right now:
1. I'd really like to work in investment management / hedge funds at a later point in my career. I plan on working in trading for my first few years out of college
2. I'd really like to teach music for Teach for America, and then move on to an MBA as a career changer and move to trading / asset management / hedge funds.
Here are the schools I'm considering:
Duke MMS program
- made for people straight out of undergrad
- only 1 year
- great access to top prop trading firms that I'm possibly targeting
- low GMAT and GPA average
UVA MS Commerce
- made for people straight out of undergrad
- only 1 year
- no access to top prop trading firms
- low GMAT and GPA average
HBS (deferred acceptance for 2 years)
- top-notch education, resources, network, and reputation
- 2 year program
- stuck to a strict career path of 2 years working + 2 years MBA
- super competitive
Stanford (deferred acceptance for 2 years)
- top-notch education, resources, network, and reputation
- 2 year program
- best weather and location (I've always wanted to live on the west coast)
- super competitive
- stuck to a strict career path of 2 years working + 2 years MBA
If I were to do either the Duke or UVA program, I'd probably go into prop trading out after finishing those programs. If I were to do either HBS or Stanford, I'd probably go into Teach for America and then switch careers after business school.
What you think about my position at these four programs? I'd really appreciate your feedback!
Thanks!
