Hi guys

I'm at crossroads here and any help would be appreciated. I'm a 26 year old Indian male, who is planning to do my mba next year(2019). But now I have got an opportunity to start my own small manufacturing unit. If I start this then I will be not be able to do my MBA for atleast the next 2-3 years, after which I can get people to look after it while I start my MBA. So should I do an MBA now, get the knowledge and then start it or should I do this first and then go for an MBA? How will this reflect on my profile and will the age difference by the time I get to start my MBA affect my application in any way?

Hi MikeHelios,

Apologies for the delayed response but we hope this helps you still.

Frankly, there is no correct answer here and a lot depends on how you are placed currently, as well as how you foresee this new venture taking off. Thus, if you feel you are ready for an MBA, you have enough talking points in your profile, and the learning that you achieve will help you to a large extent in taking the venture forward, then you must keep the venture on hold and proceed with your MBA plans.

On the flip side, if you don't feel the need for an MBA to take the venture forward or if you anticipate some major achievements in the next two years that will help you build a strong application, we suggest that you keep your MBA plans on hold for now. The age difference is really something that can be dealt with later, especially if you see strong points emerging out of this venture.

All the best! :-)

Hey MikeHelios ,

You posted your question on the wrong forum. I have moved it at the right place.

To answer your question, I think you need to understand is your profile strong enough now to get you to any good BSchool?
yes, i am looking for the 25-50 range as i feel i might be able to get those and not anything better

Do you think adding the experience of that new business will actually go in your favor and you can actually show a very good story?
yes, with just technical mechanical engineering experience, adding on business skills would definitely improve me as a person overall and also during my MBA(i feel :D)

Do you really need your MBA right now or you feel you can get into the business with your current knowledge?
To start the business i think i dont need an MBA as such, maybe few years down the line while expanding or scaling up i think i might be handicapped without it :)

Do self assessment and ask yourself what do you really need and go for it.

All the best :)

my current position in just below average i would say, after seeing a lot of profiles here i feel extremely discouraged to be honest. people have achieved so much at younger ages and have balanced work, volunteering and extra curriculars delicately. a lot to learn :)

i seriously dont think i dont need an MBA to start and run the venture for a few years. i might need while scaling up or expanding. Learning a lot about various aspects of business will add to profile i assume. im not sure. Also in these 2-3 years i think i can work on building my profile to at least make it on par with the other applicants? like extra curriculars and the like? what do you feel?

All the best! :-)

Hey MikeHelios ,

You need to understand a couple of things here:

Do you really have a story of "Why MBA?" ?
Do you have a good GMAT Score to be able to prove yourself?
Is your GPA good enough?
Will you be able to convince the adcoms that you are THE right fit?

If you feel the above factors can somewhat go against you, I would prefer working on my new business and come back once I really feel handicapped and show them that "See, now I can expand my business without getting MBA knowledge from your B School".

All the best :)

Hi MikeHelios,

Considering that you do not completely feel confident about your current profile and feel that you will be able to build the same up in the course of the next 2-3 years, we would recommend that you wait it out for now. For now, you could work on taking your venture forward and come back to your MBA later.

All the best! :-)
