In order to get at least 40 in verbal, how many questions I have to get correct out of 36? I know that the system is adaptive but still a rough number would be fine for me to estimate how much I have to improve more. As of now I am able to get 23-25 questions correct.

Hi eswarchethu135,

The more appropriate question is actually "what type of skills do you need to develop so that you can consistently earn a V40+?" To that end, before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs/mocks (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) How have you scored on each of your Official GMATs?

Goals:
5) What is your goal score?
6) When are you planning to retake the GMAT?
7) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
8) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

It's counterintuitive, but the algorithm doesn't actually take into account how many questions you get right. There's not a point at the end of the test where it says 'how many questions did this person get right overall?'. It really just looks at where you are after your last question. Here's a more in-depth analysis:

And here's a look at how it specifically affects Verbal:

Hi eswarchethu135,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. Your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Thus, there is no way to tell you exactly how many verbal questions you must get correct to score a 40.

That being said, rather than spending time worrying about the GMAC algorithm, you really should focus on the things you can control, and the number one thing you can control is getting better at the GMAT. If you get to a point at which you can dominate the GMAT, the specifics of the scoring algorithm won't matter because you will to have the skills that you need to get an amazing score, right? You may find it helpful to read this article about
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

If you have any further questions, please reach out. Good luck!
