Hi Chineseburnt,

Thanks for this excellent article. Can you please post some more sample AWA stuff on the same lines as mentioned, this would be helpful to establish a strategy for these type of problems.
Kudos(+1 from my side too).

Thanks

Hi,

Just wondered after reading a post on the forum, wheather using exactly the same template be considered as plagiarism?
Please help with your inputs for the same.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks a lot for this great post! Took my GMAT a few weeks ago and I got 6.0 in AWA. I only learned half a day and learning your 2 templates by heart was basically all I did for the AWA. So, your templates really work fine and are an easy way to score 6.0!
The hint to write down the template during the 5 min instruction time also helped me a lot because then, when the time was running, I didn't have to remember what I learned by heart, I could simply look on my paper and write the template down!
So thanks again, I can only recommend this templates!

(P.S.: I am not a native speaker; but you probably recognized that! :D)

invaluable post mate- kudos to you!

have a quick question: Does analysis of an argument come up first in the real GMAT? Or do they just appear shuffled without any specific order? Thanks-

Hi All,

The template approach outlined in this forum really does work! I took the GMAT twice in the past two months and my results support the template approach. My first go-round I received a 4.0 (18th%). I wasn't suprised by this poor performance since I hadn't prepared much for the AWA essay aside from brainstorming how I would break down an argument and outline an essay. Once I began writting in the real test I became nervous about what I could assume the grader already knew about the given passages and what I needed to quote/introduce for the first time. In addition, I wasn't sure how to reference the given passage - use 'the argument' or perhaps 'the author' or maybe even 'he/she/or they'. Combine these factors together and the output was a 4.0.

After reading through various posts in the AWA thread I took the GMAT a second time and received a 6.0 (90%) on the essay section. I used structure and focused on word count, writting as much as possible. I actually didn't have time to review either essay or make any changes to what I wrote!

Thanks for the help! Now I need to work on getting my verbal score up. I have already reviewed - and taken notes - on every Manhattan GMAT book, however my verbal score was still just a 31. Quant 44 - which is pretty much in my practice test range. Targeting 700+, although I would settle with a 680. I have hit the 700 mark on practice tests, but my last GMAT score was only a 620.

Does anyone know if I can keep this AWA score and combine it with a different GMAT test score?

Quick question:

When providing 'real world' examples (such as the F-1 regulatory body in the original post), how true do they have to be? Can I just make up examples that could be true? I seriously doubt the graders actually check this stuff...

Your templates are great. I just wanted to run this by you as a template for the argument section.

Intro:
- Restate argument
- State that its unconvincing
- List the problems (assumptions, not enough data, incorrect reasoning, etc).

Paragraph 1-3:
- List the problem(s) (assumptions, not enough data, incorrect reasoning, etc) and link it to the argument.
- Counter examples
- How to strengthen

Conclusion:
- Argument unconvincing because... repeat list of problems.

Is that about right?

Also, is have more examples always better?

Can I refer to "the author" in the essays? "The argument" gets a bit repetitive.

Is it OK, when stating ways in which the argument can be improved, to use "may" or "might" (i.e. "it might be better to do it like X")? Or should I be more forceful?

I think that would be fine. I just searched for my score report and realized that I got a 5.0 on AWA - OOPS :)

In regard to argument essay, I am actually wondering if it is necessary to foreshadow/mention the point you want to discuss in your introduction paragraph?

The guide seems to suggest that you can just make a general fit-for-all phrases like the arguments are unconvincing due to poor-reasoning, ill logic, lack of evidence...etc.

The same goes for conclusion too I guess.

Method works. 6.0ed on recent exam. Thought I wouldn't pull off the assessment but the guide kept my argument well structured. Only looked at this post 1-2 days prior to exam. Use it!
