Hi,

ReedArnoldMPREP egmat KarishmaB EMPOWERgmatVerbal GMATNinja ExpertsGlobal5 Gmat experts

I understand that accuracy is paramount to ace in GMAT. However, accuracy without speed is of no use.
I am unable to improve my speed in solving the question
in 14 mins I am able to solve only 2 SC + 2 CR and read through the passage of RC of medium length (no question attempted)

Can some one please suggest how can I improve the speed of solving

My appraoch and issue faced is as below

A. SC
Approach : Read once and understand the meaning of the sentence, read quickly again only if not understood, check the splits and eliminate
Issue : I end up taking 2+ mins for solving all the SC questions. If I don't focus on meaning in the first read, I might as well miss the SC questions based on meaning.
Source of study : Covered concepts from egmat video
Guidance required :
A1. Whether there is any comprehensive video to refresh the concepts
A2. Do I need to focus on the concepts if I have 80% accuracy in 600 to 700 level questions or solve more questions and learn concepts from there now.
A3. How can I improve my speed of solving questions
PS : I have exam in 10 days

B. CR
Approach :
1. Read the stem
2. Read the stimulus quickly (15 seconds)
3. Understand the conclusion
4. Re-read if confused to mainly understand how premise supports the conclusion [This has become must for me and so I read step 2 quickly, knowing key words help me infer the argument easily when I am re-reading it]. (30 seconds)
5. Understand what the question requires and what is expected of correct answer [Not prethink but if we have weaken to the conclusion then what criteria should the correct answer meet].

Issues
On average I take 2 mins 50 seconds to solve each CR
Source of study : Covered concepts from TTP

Guidance required :
B1. How can I improve my speed of solving questions
B2. Is there any comprehensive concept video to learn approach for each question type

C. Reading comprehension
Approach
Read with imagination, if there is complex passage and unable to read by imagining things then complete read each para quickly and then re-read.

Guidance required
C1. I am always overwhelmed when RC starts
C2. I tend to read passively if I have solve some CR and SC before
C3. I sometimes miss authors opinion
C4. How to answer "except questions" based on facts without taking too much of time
C5. Are there any concepts I should be aware of [I am aware that while reading RC, make short summary (in head) of each para and link it with previous para].
C6. Is there any comprehensive concept video to learn approach

So there is a *ton* here, and your exam is coming up quickly. Just being honest, it's tough to make big improvements in such a window. Your best chance is, I think, in SC process. You said this was your process:

Quote:
Read once and understand the meaning of the sentence, read quickly again only if not understood, check the splits and eliminate

I would focus on split-finding *first*. I know many people--myself included--who are strong in SC do not read the entire sentence. There is an 80 percent chance that the original sentence is wrong--you're spending time to read it twice, it seems, before really considering what the sentence is even testing.

A good SC test taker looks over the sentence and the answer choices to figure out what to focus on, and what not to. This video might help you think about what to hone in on early in a sentence:

For RC, you mention you're almost always intimidated by a passage when it pops up. One thing to remember is that RC is hard precisely because it throws something in front of you and you have no idea what it's about. Consider looking ahead in the passage and read a sentence as an 'appetizer.' If it's multiple paragraphs, the first sentence of the second paragraph is a great choice. Use it to get a sense of what the passage is about *and* where it's going.

And you mention passive reading--that just can't happen. You must stay actively engaged with the passage. Also, you should be stopping and rereading--sometimes even *mid sentence*.

Hi Rickooreo,

I think we should connect.
Finally, found someone with same issues.

I am experiencing the same issues for almost a year.
My untimed accuracy is good, just like you, but timed one is bad. After preparing for over a year, I am certain of only one thing- Verbal improvement is certain but slow in-fact very slow. I know the process of egmat. I have used it for a long time. Its not bad but its not efficient as well. They tell you to read for meaning- the entire original choice. When you read it completely, 1:30 minute is gone and then you eliminate each answer choice another minute is gone. For a medium- hard SC qn., it takes 2+ minutes to solve and that is strictly unacceptable. SC is scoring and we can’t waste time here, specially when we know we are a slow reader. We need more time for RCs. I don’t even have time to attempt 3 RCs.

Egmat’s approach is good if someone is not reading for meaning. It helps you to develop that habit, but we are competing with those, who read the sentence fast and understand the meaning in one go. Its a habit that they have developed over years, we can’t develop that in months. Some of them are native speakers and good readers.
So I think I agree with Reed, We need to develop a habit of knowing which part is essential with respect to choices given.

So for someone who has the same accuracy just like us 70-80%(med-hard) overall, but who is a good reader can easily score better than us.

So we just have 1 option- to improve the accuracy to 90-100%.

I think its tough for us to reach our desired score this year but if we can consistently prepare for another 6 months, its 100% possible. Its very slow. Verbal improvement is very slow for people like us. even studying consistently for 3-4 hours a day.
