Hello,
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my inquiry.
Just to give you some context, I am a finance graduate with less than 1 year of experience (internships) looking to transition into the UK to kickstart my career in finance. I have completed the GMAT to be able to apply to master's programs in the UK and then hopefully break into the market. I have tried applying to LBS' MFA (in R3) but ended up being rejected.
However, I am slowly realizing that my profile is not very competitive considering that:
- GPA: 3.4 CGPA: 3.6; I used to major in architecture, hence why the CGPA is higher
- only 3 internships of 3 months each during a span of 2 years (banking, Deloitte, and local consulting firm)
- GMAT: 690
Taking that into consideration, I have started to consider applying to MiM programs and other less competitive Msc programs (acc. & fin., analytics) at LBS, LSE, and Oxbridge. Nevertheless, I feel that at this stage (R3-R4) it might be useless since there is a lot of applications and competition around this time, and I have nearly exhausted all of my academic references.
Alternatively, I was thinking that converting my current internship, in consulting, into a full-time offer and then later applying for these programs could be another route.
Any advice on what to do?
Also, should I stick only to MSF programs? Are MiMs and other Mscs less well regarded than MSFs?
Thank you
danymasri98 hope this finds you wellTry to get utmost clarity in your mind whether you would be a better fit for the MiM type of programs or more specialized MiF/MSF type of programs. If I look at some of my applicants who made it to specialized masters in the UK, I see they had extremely focused SOPs and applications that justified their need for a specialization and their passion for the subject. Perhaps you applied a bit late with seemingly mediocre application which resulted in your rejection. The specialized programs at all these schools are somewhat academically oriented (LBS maybe not so much), and they all want to vet whether the candidates have seriously thought through their decision of pursuing a specialization in Finance for example.
If the MSF result was not positive, you can also consider some other top courses like LSE MSc Strategy and Management which is essentially a course in Managerial economics and Imperial's MSc Economics and Strategy which are quite selective but will keep you more focused on the subject matter especially if you are targeting Consulting and FP&A sort of roles in the future. Please note that your SOPs would have to be exceptional and resume crafted such that your entire history leads to the decision for pursuing these specialized courses. Be proactive and have correspondence with the profs. My applicants were successful in their pursuits because they researched the schools so well and even traveled to meet the faculty (because why not?). Know what each school looks for, for example LSE is extremely academic and they expect a nerdy approach in the SOPs too.
Coming to MiM, the courses are fine but it would be hard for you to stand out with these general management courses in management when the market is flooded with subject matter experts and MBAs. Do your own research. If you want to pursue MiM then its perhaps best to try and convert your current internship to a full-time offer and then evaluate the need for an MiM or MBA sometime after from a feeder school for IB. There are so many masters courses in the UK, you must do your own due diligence by reaching out to the students and professors in the respective courses and build your perspective on the opportunities out of each. If you even want to pursue an MBA in the long run from a prestigious college, specialized masters are better pathways to top MBAs than MiMs.
