IE Business School ranked No. 3 in Europe by Financial Times [#permalink]

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IE Business School ranked No. 3 in Europe by Financial Times
IE Business School is the No. 3 business school in Europe and No. 1 in Spain in the 2017 Financial Times ranking of European Business Schools.

This annual FT report is based on the results obtained by leading European business schools in the partial FT rankings of MBA programs, Executive MBA programs, Masters in Management, and Executive Education programs, published throughout the year by Financial Times. Previous FT rankings also include the Online MBA survey which ranked IE Business School’s Global MBA as the No. 1 online MBA in the world (March 2017).

The FT ranking of European business schools is drawn up using a range of criteria that include the level of internationalization of the school and the international reach of its programs, career and salary progression of graduates, the degree to which expectations are met, and levels of research. “This recognition evidences the quality of our MBA, Master in Management, Masters in Finance and Executive Education programs,” said Martin Boehm, Dean of IE Business School. “It strengthens our commitment to continue to reinvent higher education with a special focus on technology and innovation, entrepreneurship, diversity and the humanities.”

This particular Financial Times ranking takes into account the positions achieved by IE Business School in the rankings of Masters in Management (No. 3 worldwide), MBAs (No. 8), Executive MBAs (No. 13), and Executive Education Open Programs (No. 22). Other rankings drawn up by Financial Times this year but not taken into account for the European Business School Ranking include the Online MBA survey (which placed IE No. 1 worldwide with its Global MBA) or the Masters in Finance ranking, in which IE is positioned No. 8 in the world with its Master in Finance.

El IE y Harvard cambian profesores por “Hologramas” [#permalink]

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: El IE y Harvard cambian profesores por “Hologramas”

IMBA Success Stories: Guilherme Ubiali at GlaxoSmithKline [#permalink]

Show Tags

New post 23 Feb 2018, 08:01
FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IMBA Success Stories: Guilherme Ubiali at GlaxoSmithKline
Guilherme UbialiIE International MBA 2016 Graduate, started this year in the GlaxoSmithKline EspritProgram, a 4-year rotational Program at GSK. He will be based in Madrid, Spain during the first year. Afterwards, he will be assigned to any country in the world where the company has operations and open opportunities that fit into Guilherme’s career plan.

Before coming to IE, he developed the biggest part of his career in Brazil mainly in finance, in the mining/logistic industry in a company called Vale. After that he had an experience as entrepreneur for two years, in a Marketing Agency that he founded along with two partners, focused on helping other entrepreneurs to develop their business image and digital media. His only experience in marketing in big companies was in a summer job during the MBA in Johnson & Johnson Brazil. He explains “I am doing a very significant career change, I am moving for a more senior position, in new company, in a new industry and in a new country, my first time working outside Brazil. I am happy and grateful for being able to do all four changes, and ready for the big challenges that are waiting for me.”

Q: I understand that the Esprit Program is focused on the Commercial aspect of the company. Can you please tell us briefly anything else about your new job? How does this fit into your career-life plan?

A: My career-life plan is to become a senior director or head of a country in sales or marketing departments, because of that I am sure the Esprit Program was the best option. The Program will allow me to work in several roles in the Commercial department in different countries, something I think is very important to my career. Besides that, the Program offers several development opportunities to work on interesting projects in a challenging environment, always with the support of a mentor.

Q: Has your personal career strategy always been focused on the pharmaceutical industry or were you aiming at earning more experience in Commercial functions?

A: I assume that when I started the MBA I was a little bit loss, I knew that I didn’t want to work with finance anymore, but I was not sure in what or even where I wanted to work. So, my first decision was to work in Commercial departments, with sales or marketing. The second decision was the industry and I decided to focus in two industries, FMCG, due to the dynamic environment, and Pharmaceutical, due their leadership in innovation. The opportunity in GSK is in Healthcare Consumer Products (OTC, Skin Health, Oral Health, Wellness, Nutrition, etc), a mix of both industries I was looking for. Therefore, I think the Esprit Program is the perfect program that can allow me to reach my goals.

Q: How did Talent and Careers and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process? Did you use specific career resources or did you come across useful information via an advisor or alumni?

A: Yes, it was more than important, it was crucial. Both, GSK and J&J (where I did the summer internship) were companies that I met because of their Company Presentations at IE. Besides that, I also used WorkmazeMBA-Exchange, Job Postings, Guides and several other resources available on IE Career Portal. One resource that helped me a lot was Vmock, because my CV was not very good before coming to IE and improved a lot after Vmock.

But the help of Talent and Careers with my objectives goes beyond that, our Career AdvisorTeresa González, was really important to help in soul-searching and defining a career strategy and improving my CV. Lorena Martínez, Career Advisor at Talent and Careers, who specializes in Healthcare and Pharmaceutical sector, was responsible for bringing several pharmaceutical companies to IE, and I went to all of the company presentations. And finally, Margarida ConstantinoDirector of Career Education, organized several interesting Career Fitness events and workshops that helped me to create a good elevator pitch, improve my LinkedIn profile, learn how to properly network and practice interviews.

Q: How was the recruiting process?

A: It was not as long as it usually is in other companies:

  • First stage was sending the CV through an on-line platform, for me, this is the hardest part where the biggest number of candidates fail.
  • After I passed this stage, I received an e-mail inviting me to complete two on-line tests, which included questions about logic and graph interpretation.
  • The third part was an HR interview in the local language of the country, and in my case, it was the first time I did a whole interview in Spanish.
  • Finally, I attended the Assessment Day in the London HQ. It was two days, the first was an explanation about the company and a dinner with previous employees of the program. The second day was more intense, and it was when the company made the final decision. We were 5 candidates for one position in Spain, 3 from IE. We had to work in teams, solve cases, present ideas to a board and do interviews in a very interesting and dynamic day.
Q: Would you want to share any tips or advice with student interested in applying to GSK? To your job position in particular?

A: My first tip is for all IE students that are looking for jobs, even in other industries; use as much as you can of the IE Talent and Careers resources. Nobody will do anything for you, but if you go, ask for help, use the IE Career Portal and go to events, you can find very useful tools that will help you a lot.

Second tip, after selecting one industry, participate in that industry’s IE Club and go to all events of that industry (both Clubs and Careers events), even to events of the companies you are not applying to. You learn a lot in these events, it is very important to learn about the culture of the companies and their “language” and also learn about challenges, opportunities and risks in that industry, questions that all the companies will do in the interviews.

Finally, a more specific tip about GSK, understand the pharmaceutical industry culture. Pharmaceutical companies have a very strong culture with focus on the client/patient always looking for quality and innovation. Even they have some similarities with other industries, like FMCG, their culture is unique and all the recruiters are trained to identify if you will adapt or not to that culture. The best way to do that is talking with current employees of these companies, look at your contacts and at the IE alumni network to find somebody that could help you. Also, feel free to contact me!

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IE Business School classifies for the VIII ODYSSEY: The Global MBA Games
Image

This week, 6 IMBA students from the September 2017 intake will represent the School in an International Case Competition that englobes more than 25 top Business Schools around the Globe.

Vimbai Chamboko, Ryan Harrington, Matías Mehech, Sonia Sahni, Sergio Sánchez and Felix Schuchter are currently doing their Lab Period and will travel to New York to participate in the 8th edition of the MBA ODYSSEY on the 23 and 24 of March.

When asked what the competition consists of, Vimbai said “The competition consists of two rounds: Stage 1 is the qualifier stage, in which four-member teams participate in a challenging online business game – our initial team excelled at this and put us through to the second and final stage. Six-member teams participate in the final stage which consists of three rounds: an entrepreneurial pitch, a negotiation exercise and a sales and marketing pitch”. She also highlighted that “It is also an opportunity for MBA students to learn from global leaders about entrepreneurship and network.”

The journey to the MBA ODYSSEY started when Sergio found a brochure of the competition on LinkedIn “inviting students from the best business schools of the world.” As he thought it could be a very interesting experience, he invited some of his peers to form a team and prepare to compete. This team was thought on diversity, skills and high performance. Thus, Matías explained “Each of us plays a role in our area of expertise, creating a team with a strong backbone of financial experience, together with deep understanding in project management, supply chain and sales. Also, we looked for a team that had entrepreneurial experience. As common ground for everyone, we chose to have a team with confident pitching and communication skills.”

Competitions like this one allows students to implement the concepts taught so far. In this sense, Felix considers it “the perfect opportunity for us to put what we’ve learned over the last months, in and outside of the classroom, to the ultimate test. This is exactly the sort of challenge I sought and that will help me further deepen my understanding of practical applications of the MBA toolkit, but also to show that as a team we can deliver and stand out amongst the competition!” In addition, he states that synergy is key ingredient to combine theory, practice and the experience with peers from all the world: “An added bonus of international competitions such as this one is the opportunity to mingle with business leaders and representatives from other schools. Meeting new interesting people in a stimulating environment, we will certainly make some great new connections and strengthen our international outlook.”

As to what it means for them to represent the School, Ryan says: “It’s an honor to represent IE at an international competition like MBA ODYSSEY and compete against some of the best business schools in the world. I am very proud of the team we formulated and feel like our truly diverse backgrounds (representing 5 continents) gives us the potential to not only represent IE well, but to win.” Furthermore, he feels excited to represent IE as an ambassador in North America: “I am firm believer in international exposure and believe our greatest strength is our diversity.” He finally states: “I can’t wait to show why IE is not your ordinary elite business school.”

Congratulations to the team and best of luck!

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IE Business School launches #IEToken to work with blockchain technology on its International MBA
IE Business School has launched #IEToken, a pilot program based on blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies

The School, which enjoys international renown for its commitment to applying technologies to the learning process, created #IEToken Waves for the purpose of the program. The directors of IE’s International MBA Startup Lab have given 10,000 tokens to each student to invest in cryptocurrencies and work on creating value on a collaborative basis.

The project team explained that the #IEToken Project is a pedagogical experiment whereby students learn to create value within a technological environment based on blockchain. “The students feel responsible for the project because they are personally involved on a collaborative basis to drive value creation, given that if a student increases the value of the token everyone will benefit.”

Students who take part in the International MBA Startup Lab develop business plans as part of the learning process. On completion of the program, the projects are presented to investors who, for the first time, can now invest in them using #IETokens.

The 2.4 million tokens issued are all in students’ hands. Some 70% have been given Startup Lab students, and the remaining 30% have been placed in a portfolio which will be used for a social project selected by students of IE’s International MBA Social Impact initiative, aimed at strengthening collaboration among students and promoting social projects.

The #IETokens are available to anyone and are listed on a decentralized exchange. This means that IE’s International MBA students can develop the project anywhere in the world given that they can receive offers from any country. “We want students to understand what value means and to learn to create it from scratch,” says Asier Arranz, Director of IE Business School’s Technology Lab. “It is also a way for business school students to understand and use advanced blockchain tools, a skill which will be very much in demand in coming years.”

“Innovation consists of creating new experiences. This is the perfect moment for future entrepreneurs to learning how to generate value for their firms using new technology tools,” says Sugata Jain, Associate Director of IE Business School’s International MBA Program.

“Career journeys in a changing world are shaped by an environment of disruptive trends in which the skills employers are seeking are changing quickly, with blockchain being one of the leading buzzwords these days. It is important to understand the plethora of opportunities created and the implications, as well as how blockchain can be applied to both business and social challenges.” Executive Director of IE Career Services.

Faculty Spotlight: Professor Celia de Anca [#permalink]

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Faculty Spotlight: Professor Celia de Anca

Faculty Spotlight: Professor Celia de Anca

When approaching the subject of diversity in the corporate world, Celia de Anca is looking more deeply and broadly than many other specialists in this area. She sees diversity in terms of three concentric circles or layers and is interested in establishing the different tools needed to train people at these different levels.

On the outer layer, she says, are the marketing and communications activities companies put in place around diversity, while the central layer concerns more practical issues such as encouraging work-life balance, providing maternity leave or accommodating employees with a disability. At the inner core is what culture and gender can bring to the business.

It is this inner core Prof de Anca finds most compelling and is what she believes brings the most value to those companies that get it right. “You can have a flexible place to work, and you need marketing, but if you want to really learn about diversity you have to go deeper,” she says. And for the Spanish-born professor, diversity means more than simply gender or ethnicity. It also encompasses personal characteristics. “Just because you have a woman on the board, doesn’t necessarily mean you have sensitivity,” she says.

Prof de Anca also believes that her work is filling a gap between a strictly academic approach to diversity and the hands-on diversity training conducted by consultants and in-house corporate learning departments. “At business schools, we can give more depth to what corporations are doing but we also need to take on board more of the practicality that corporations and consultants use in their teaching.”

She also spreads her knowledge and experience beyond business school walls. Part of this is reading papers at international conferences and publishing articles in specialist magazines. But Prof de Anca also organises training and mentoring programmes for female entrepreneurs in Latin American and Islamic countries, and has run and managed educational projects in the Middle East for 10 years. She is a member of the Ethics Committee of Morgan Stanley’s Ethics Fund, Spain and a member of the International Scientific Committee of the University Euromed in Marseille, France.

Cognitive Diversity: Your next competitive advantage?

In an increasingly fragmented world, traditional sources of knowledge and innovation are no longer enough. Professor Celia de Anca, Director of the Diversity Center at IE Business School, explains why cognitive diversity – different ideas, perceptions and knowledge – will be a key driver for the fourth industrial revolution.

ODYSSEY: The Global MBA Games

Right before Spring break, Vimbai Chamboko, Ryan Harrington, Matías Mehech, Sonia Sahni, Sergio Sánchez and Felix Schuchter flew to New York City and represented IE Business School in the 8th edition of ODYSSEY: The Global MBA Games. Previously, the team shared their thoughts and expectations, and now they are sharing their opinions on what they took from the competition.

“The experience of competing with students from some of the best Business Schools in the world brought out the best in us”, Sonia said. “We participated in a negotiation case with some of the toughest negotiators. We created a viral marketing campaign at the Columbia Business School campus itself [and] we pitched our startup idea to venture capitalists who were there to identify their next investment opportunity”. In her opinion the “biggest take away from the event was the network with peers and industry professionals from different continents”. In addition, she points out that this type of activities give worldwide opportunities and in multiple sectors, reason for which she encourages the IE community to “participate in many more such challenges in order to learn and grow”.

An interesting moment of the two-day competition was the possibility to listen to keynote speakers from organizations such as Nestle, Y&R and the United Bank for Africa, covering topics which went from management to disruptive technology. When asked about it, Matías highlighted Muhtar Kent, Chairman of the board at the Coca-Cola Company. “He explained the long-term growth view Coca-Cola has and the innovation and tireless growth-seeking mindset. He explained the different innovations Coca-Cola has done through the years and also mentioned the importance of partnerships and humility to enhance innovation. Finally, he gave some professional and personal advice on how future business leaders should approach the uncertainty that rules today`s business environment”

In this sense, it would be safe to say that what networking has a fundamental role in Schools competitions. In Ryan’s words, it is “the highlight of the event” because you are able to mix and mingle with MBA peers who are going through a similar experience. “The icing on the cake, however, was getting to meet and have conversations with some amazing guest speakers like […] Muhtar Kent and David Sable, Young & Rubicam Global CEO”.

Finally, the opportunity to represent IE in the MBA ODYSSEY gave the team the chance to broaden their horizons. On this note, Felix first reflected on the cultural differences: “Pitching our start-up idea to American investors has been a real eye-opener. The venture game is certainly at a different level in the US which of course means there is potentially a lot more investment to take home at the end of the day. I for one learned, that you need to think in different dimensions when you pitch in the [United] States”. Furthermore, he explained how being a good listener can provide novelty in one’s brainstorming: “[…] Rubbing shoulders with other business schools exposes you to a wealth of different ideas. Hearing other contestants’ thinking, ideas and pitches has certainly provided me with additional food-for-thought and exposed us to many different styles and views, things I haven’t considered before. Hearing from top business people and thinkers has also added new perspectives to my thinking. In fact, some of the things I’ve learned during the competition I’m already using back here in Madrid”.
