We can actually solve this question without doing any calculations. Instead, we'll just use a little number sense.

37.5% is less than 1/2.
So, if LESS THAN half of the 880 students ARE enrolled in biology, we can conclude that MORE THAN half of the 880 students are NOT enrolled in biology.
Half of 880 is 440, so we're looking for an answer choice that's GREATER THAN 440

This leaves C or E.
Of course, E makes no sense, so the correct answer is

Students enrolled in biology are 37.5% and therefore not enrolled are 62.5%. so of 880 is 880*.625 = 550
Answer is C 550

(100- 37.5)% of 880 = 550

37.5% = 3/8

1 - 3/8 = 5/8*880 = 550

Answer: C

Ans :

There are 2 methods to this

Long method :

> 37.5 % of 880 = x (no of students studying biology)
> (37.5/100) * 880 = 330
>Since 330 people out of 880 people are studying biology
> No of people not studying biology = 880 - 330 = 550 people

Short Method

> We know 37.5 % people study biology,therefore the no of people not studying = 100 - 37.5 = 62.5%
> Therefore the people not studying biology out of a total 880 people are = 62.5 % of 880
> (62.5/100)*880 = 550 people

Students at the college are NOT enrolled in a biology class must be greater than 50% or 440 and less than 880

Only Answer Choice C matched with above restriction

37.5 looks ugly.
The moment you convert it to 3/8, things get easy.
Conversions such as these save a lot of time on GMAT.

Since 37.5% = 3/8, then 3/8 of the 880 students are enrolled in biology classes. This means 5/8 of the students, or 5/8 x 880 = 5 x 110 = 550 students, are not.

Answer: C

37.5% is 3/8. So students not enrolled is 5/8*880=5*110=550

Hence C
