If \(d\) is an integer, is \(d = d^3\)?
1) \(d < 1\)
2) \(d < 0\)

for \(d=d^3\) ---> \(d(d^2-1)\) = 0 ---> d(d+1)(d-1)=0 ---> for \(d=d^3\), d = 0 or 1 or -1
Per statement 1, d<1 , so if d = 0 or -1, the answer is "yes" to "is \(d=d^3\)" but if d=-2, the answer is "no" to "is \(d=d^3\)". Statement is NOT sufficient.
Per statement 2, d<0 , so if d = -1, the answer is "yes" to "is \(d=d^3\)" but if d=-2, the answer is "no" to "is \(d=d^3\)". Statement is NOT sufficient.
Combining, you get again d<0 and thus both statements together are still not sufficient. E is the correct answer.

Target question: Is \(d = d^3\)?
When I SCAN the two statements, they both feel insufficient, AND I’m pretty sure I can identify some cases with conflicting answers to the target question. So, I’m going to head straight to……
Statements 1 and 2 combined
There are several values of d that satisfy BOTH statements. Here are two:
Case a: d = -1. Here, \(d = d^3\) becomes \(-1 = (-1)^3\), which is true. In this case, the answer to the target question is YES, d = d³
Case b: d = -2. Here, \(d = d^3\) becomes \(-2 = (-2)^3\), which is NOT true. In this case, the answer to the target question is NO, d does NOT equal d³
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, the combined statements are NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: E
