If it is true that Netherlands' manufacturing sector declined in the 1970s as a result from the discovery of a natural gas field in 1959, other countries with newly-found natural resources are expecting a similar shock to their economies, and should pursue policies that will help them avoid what in 1977 the Economist termed "Dutch disease".

A. as a result from the discovery of a natural gas field in 1959, other countries with newly-found natural resources are expecting 1. Correct idiom is "as a result of". 2. Classic case of if and then conditional. If simple present, then simple present/will/may is the correct structure. Also, there is a meaning error. Correct answer choice takes away that ambiguity in meaning clearly.

B. as a result of the discovery of a natural gas field in 1959, other countries with newly-found natural resources are expectingUses correct idiom "as a result of". But the meaning error of option A is repeated here.

C. resulting from the discovery of a natural gas field in 1959, other countries with newly-found natural resources can expect Idiom error. Though it correctly uses "Other countries can expect" phrase to convey the intended meaning of the case of Netherlands acting as a learning lesson for other countries.

D. as a result of the discovery of a natural gas field in 1959, other countries with newly-found natural resources can expect This is the correct choice with correct idiom and verb tense by conveying the meaning perfectly.

E. resulting in the discovery of a natural gas field in 1959, other countries with newly-found natural resources haveresulting in the discovery. This is total distortion of the meaning. It makes it sound as if the decline of manufacturing sector led to the discovery of natural resources.

D is the correct choice. "FROM" can be straight away rejected. "Have" is not required as economic downturn is not a certainty
