If k is an integer, is k^2 < 100?
(1) k <10
(2) k is a multiple of 7

Question: Is k^2 < 100?

Question REPHRASED: Is -10 < k < 10?

Statement 1: k <10

K may be 9 YES and k may be -20 NO hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

STatement 2: k is a multiple of 7

k may be 7 (YES) or 14 (NO) hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the statements

CONCEPT: Multiples of any integer are essentially Positive Integer

i.e. Multiple(s) of 7 which is/are less than 10 is 7 only

hence k = 7 which is between -10 and 10 hence

SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option C

GMATinsight :-Hello Sir, Is it true that we are to take only positive multiples?

What if the stem says :- "4 consecutive even integers" (nothing but multiples of 2) - are we not supposed to consider -4, -2, 0, 2 scenario?

Let me p[ut it this way.

None of the questions (not even one) in long history of GMAT has asked a question which included negative factors or multiples of any non-zero integer. The problems of GMAT are quite specific about factors and multiples and ensure that they are positive all the time.

No exception so far. I would like to be apprised If I missed even one question ever.

But yes technically Negative values may be the factors of multiples... So taking down my explanation.[color=#004b80] :)

k can be -7 or 7 when combining both the statements. In both the cases k^2 will be less than 100. Not sure how the ans is E.
