If the average age of three people is 21 years, is the youngest older than 13?

(1) The oldest is 25.
(2) One person is 24.

Hi
average of 21 means sum of age is 21*3 = 63...

(1) The oldest is 25.
To make the youngest the least, make the other two the oldest...

so the two eldest = 25+25 = 50..
age of youngest = 63-50 =13..
so youngest will be at the least 13..
so our answer for " is the youngest older than 13" will always be NO
Suff

(2) One person is 24.
Nothing can be said about the other two
example -
1, 24, 38----- YES
18,21,24------ NO
Insuff

A

HI chetan , for statement 1 .. youngest is at least 13 means he can 13 or > 13 rt ?

how can we say youngest 13 here ? other two both eldest is our assumption so we are not sure whether he >13 or =13.

If we combine it's very clear .

Hi Babu,

I will have to edit the answer Because while answering somehow I thought Q is "is the youngest younger than 13".. Here statement I is suff as youngest is atleast 13....

Combined-
one is 25 and other is 24.. third will be 63-25-24 = 14..
ans is YES
Suff

C
THE OLDEST is 25, so no one else is 25.
Therefore: 63-25=38. If any other person is 24 then the third have to be 14>13. Answer A.

Hi,
Although OA given is A, i would still go with C.
Nowhere it mentions that the age are different.
What if the three are 25 yrs 2 days and 25yrs and 3 days.
The oldest is 25 yrs but other is also 25..

The oldest is 25 does not mean only one will that age.
In GMAT actuals they will mention different ages if all are different.

I agree, this should be C, otherwise the question needs rephrasing. I don't believe you can infer that they cannot have the same age from the question.
