1. x > y INSUFFICIENT
2. 3x - 2y = 14 SUFFICIENT (x = 2y and solve for Y)

Given x=2y

Statement 1: x>y

For y = 2 , x=4 and it satisfies the x>y condition
xy=8

for y=3, x=6 and it satisfies the x>y condition
xy=18

Hence Statement 1 is NOT sufficient

Statement 2: 3x-2y=14

Substituting 2y=x

3x-x=14
2x=14
x=7

y=7/2

xy= 49/2

Hence Statement 2 alone is sufficient

Project DS Butler: Day 15: Data Sufficiency (DS30)

For DS butler Questions Click Here

If \(x\) = \(2y\) , what is the value of \(xy\)?

1. \(x\) > \(y\)
2. \(3x\) - \(2y\) = 14

(A) Let \(y=1\) then \(x=2\) and \(xy=2\), also Let \(y=2\) then \(x=4\) and \(xy=4\). Clearly, statement 1 alone is insufficient.

(B) \(3x-2y=14\) and we know that \(x=2y\), substituting this we get \(6y-2y=14\) or \(4y=14\) or \(y=\frac{7}{2}\) and \(x=7\). Now \(xy=\frac{49}{2}\). Sufficient.

Hence, B.
