If xy = 4, what is the value of xy(x – y) ?

(1) x^2*y = 16
(2) x + y = 5

hi

statement 1 states that x is equal to 4, and y is equal to 1, hence sufficient..

statement 2, however, provides 2 options
either
x = 1
y = 4
or
x = 4
y = 1
not sufficient ...

thanks ..

(1) x^2*y = 16: \(x^2y=16… xy=4…4x=16…x=4…y=1\) sufic.
(2) x + y = 5: insufic.
\(x=5-y…xy=4…(5-y)y=4…y^2-5y+4=0…(y-1)(y-4)=0…y=(4,1)\)
\(y=(4,1)…xy=4…x=(1,4)…xy(x – y)=[4(1-4)=-12,4(4-1)=12]\)

Answer (A)
