Hello,
I currently work as an auditor at an unknown / not prestigious accounting firm and very much dislike accounting. I have 1.5 yrs experience. I am looking for a career change and wish to attend a top 20 US MBA program.

My plan is to leave my job and hopefully join an AmeriCorps program to tutor kids with reading (won't leave my job until I have a tutoring gig lined up). As a person who has struggled with dyslexia and have overcome many obstacles I think tutoring would be a good experience for me and I think I could help others.

My question:
How would 1.5yrs of work experience in a low ranked accounting firm and then leaving to tutor kids with a program like AmeriCorps, I would also take some classes at a local community college just to expand my knowledge base, be viewed by a top MBA program?

additional about me: I had a 3.9/4.0 GPA in a tier2 undergrad degree in accounting. A 3.8/4.0 at the same school's master in accounting. I'm a licensed CPA.

The MBA programs will have no problem with your taking some time to do AmeriCorps. However they will want to see a clear goal and experience that future employers will value. it may be wise for you to work in the area you ultimately want to go into before you get your MBA. This will make your goal more credible and also be advantageous when you go to look for a job. Even six months before you apply, which will mean 1.5 years by the time you matriculate.
