In an attempt to improve economic and social welfare of the people, the Hortland government has recently announced a scheme under which the government would provide certain staple foods at 30% discount to the authorized dealers. As the price of these staple foods will reduce, the low income consumers would surely be benefitted by the scheme.

Which of the following would be most useful to establish in evaluating the argument?

A. Whether discounting the staple prices is the only way to improve the economic and social welfare of the people?
B. Whether consumer with medium or high income groups would also be benefitted by the scheme?
C. Whether the discounted staples generate a significantly high demand in low income group?
D. Whether the prices that dealers charge for the staples will reflect the lower prices they would be paying the government.
E. Whether this scheme would have adverse impact on budgetary allocation of other initiative taken by the government.

Looking forward to a constructive discussion! :)

Thanks!

I selected D)

My way of approch
Conclusion : As the price of these staple foods will reduce, the low income consumers would surely be benefitted by the scheme.

Answering to these question should prove my conclusion is good.

A. Whether discounting the staple prices is the only way to improve the economic and social welfare of the people? - This is too extreme. We are not considered on whole people. We are concerned only about low income people
B. Whether consumer with medium or high income groups would also be benefitted by the scheme? - Who cares abt medium or high income groups. We are concerned only about low income people
C. Whether the discounted staples generate a significantly high demand in low income group? - If say Yes/no this doesnt give details where low income people are benifited.
D. Whether the prices that dealers charge for the staples will reflect the lower prices they would be paying the government. If yes. Only then the low income people will be benifited
E. Whether this scheme would have adverse impact on budgetary allocation of other initiative taken by the government. - Irrelevant

Kudos if this helped at-least a bit :P

:)Regards,
Swami

my reasoning : to evaluate an argument u need to consider the statement from one extreme spectrum to another extreme spectrum and if in the process of doing so u can move from strengthening to weakening or vice-a-verse then that statement is the evaluation statement of that argument

now D says : Whether the prices that dealers charge for the staples will reflect the lower prices they would be paying the government

case 1 : lets say the answer of D is yes--->then the conclusion of the argument "As the price of these staple foods will reduce, the low income consumers would surely be benefitted by the scheme." will get strengthened

case 2 :lets say the answer of D is NO --->then the conclusion of the argument "As the price of these staple foods will reduce, the low income consumers would surely be benefitted by the scheme." will be weakened !!

hence D seems oki here

I must say you've explained it very well. Kudos to you!

Prethinking works wonders for this particular question, whether the Dealers are will/ will be passing on the discounted benefits to the end users, Answer must hence definitely be (D)
