well done GMATBootcamp

I knew there was a "as many as" ... but I found answer A pretty awkward and then chose E.
I should have used POE to get rid of non possible constructions and get only A as a possible answer!

Thanks Gmatbootcamp,

I should have just looked at this question thru a simpler eyes, I kept thinking that this is a trick question and that A can't be it. I pick E at the end :(

"As many as" is correct idiom and properly used in option A.

Try substituting simpler words when in doubt

(A) Americans were killed as
>> I read as many books as you do.
(B) Americans were killed than
>> I read as many books than you do.
(C) Americans were killed than those who
>> I read as many books than the one which you do.
(D) more Americans were killed as there
>> I read as many more books as there you do.
(E) more Americans were killed as those who
>> I read as many more books as ones which you do.

It's a clear A.

In one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, fought at Sharpsburg,Maryland, on September 17,1862,four times as many Americans were killed as would later be killed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day

A. Americans were killed as
B. Americans were killed than
C. Americans were killed than those who
D. more Americans were killed as there
E. more Americans were killed as those who

I want to know whats the difference between "as" and "than" here, as i selected option "C"

Answered A. Agree with the above answer. as many as...

I was also looking at E because it contained as... as those who.. But, "as many more" didn't sound right!

this question focus more on sentence pattern than on meaning. we have to remember the pattern in Choice A, the official answer. in the choice A, the subject of second clause of comparison is absent.
some relative pattern are

4 times as many men as women are students in this class.

from two above pattern we infer that in comparison, only two different elements compared need to appear. the element which are appear in first clause need to be cut off in the second clause.

D and E introduces redundancy- we already have as many. as many...than and as many...than those who are clearly wrong, thus eliminating B and C. So ans is (A).

The idiom that is tested here is ‘as many… as

The only option that has the idiom without additional errors here is Option A.

Options B and C can be eliminated for not using the correct idiomatic structure.

Options D and E
introduce the error of redundancy. Eliminate.

Option A is the best choice.

Hope this helps!

Hi GMATGuruNY , VeritasKarishma , BillyZ generis egmat DmitryFarber MartyTargetTestPrep

Could you please confirm if the bolded portions of the below options are used correctly?
I understand the other reasons why all the below options are incorrect but wanted to understand the role of the bolded parts.

(C) Americans were killed than those who.
(D) more Americans were killed as there
(E) more Americans were killed as those who

C says: Americans were killed than <action> -wrong because of idiom. here comparison is Americans were killed vs other people. We need to find a comparison killed vs would later be killed
D : wrong comparison people vs there
E: Here comparison is: Americans vs those xxx ( people vs people)
A comparison : Americans were killed vs (americans ) would later xxx ( action vs action)
