In the figure, A, B, C, and D are points on a line in that order. If AC = 5, BD = 10, and AD = 13, then what is the length of BC ?

(A) 2
(B) 8
(C) 15
(D) 18
(E) 28

Lets assume
AB = x
BC = y
CD = z

AC = x+y = 5,
BD = y+z = 10, and
AD = x+y+z = 13

i.e. z = 13-5 = 8
i.e. y = 2 = BC
i.e. x = 3

Answer: Option A
