Re: DS- Number Question [#permalink]
I messed up while interpreting stmt1. I went for D. The way I interpreted Stmt1 is the second highest digit and completely forgot that 7 can also be that digit as 8 is not appearing in the telephone number.

Re: DS- Number Question [#permalink]
The second sentence is awkward. The guy who wrote this needs to desperately go through the Manhattan SC guide before framing DS questions in the future.

Re: In the telephone number 936-215X, what digit does X [#permalink]
1. 7 OR 8 NS
2. (0, 4, 7, 8) are the numbers left not among the telephone numbers first six. And the greatest is what X is! so its 8. Sufficient.

ANSWER: B

More of a verbal question then Quant!

statement 2 suffices but why statement 1 contradicts the right answer? i thought it is not possible on the GMAT?

In the telephone number 936-215X, what digit does X represent?

(1) Only one digit in the telephone number is greater than X --> x could be 7 or 8. Not sufficient.

(2) X is the greatest of the digits not among the telephone number’s first six digits. The digits that are NOT in the telephone number are: 0, 4, 7 and 8. Greatest among them is 8. Hence x is 8. Sufficient.

Answer: B.

Hope it's clear.
