1,2,3,5,6<7 and 8<9.

Im still confused w/ the wording of B. So ima hold off on any answer choices. Whered u get this question?

Answer is "B". I do not understand the second statement which is why I didn't get it right the first time and I still do not have a clear understanding.

It should be B.

(2) X is the greatest of the digits not among the telephone number’s first six digits.

Find the digits that are not among the telephone number's first six digits.
8,7,4,0 ..

greatest of {8,7,4,0} is 8.
Sufficient

I messed up while interpreting stmt1. I went for D. The way I interpreted Stmt1 is the second highest digit and completely forgot that 7 can also be that digit as 8 is not appearing in the telephone number.

The second sentence is awkward. The guy who wrote this needs to desperately go through the Manhattan SC guide before framing DS questions in the future.

1. 7 OR 8 NS
2. (0, 4, 7, 8) are the numbers left not among the telephone numbers first six. And the greatest is what X is! so its 8. Sufficient.

ANSWER: B

More of a verbal question then Quant!

1) Only one digit in the telephone number is greater than X
2) X is the greatest of the digits not among the telephone number's first six digit.

statement 2 suffices but why statement 1 contradicts the right answer? i thought it is not possible on the GMAT?
