I don't want to give too much information about this so I don't do more damage but I want to share an incident with the group to get some perspective. And also provide a warning.
First some background : I have just started to prepare my applications for admissions to biz school next year. I am still new to the process of investigating schools, information gathering and articulating my MBA and post-MBA aspirations. For the most part ,all I have done to prepare for next year is to have taken the GMAT.
I am also local to a top school which also happens to be my first choice school. I am just starting to do my due-diligence on this school and other than knowing it has a great reputation, I don't know a lot about the particulars of the program. The school had advertised "one on one" information sessions where you could come by on a weekend and speak with a representative about the school and program. I decided to attend one of these sessions hoping to just have a casual chat and learn a little more about the program, my fit and my chances.
Imagine my surprise when I arrived on a Saturday morning and found myself not in a casual chat situation but rather in a rather high-pressure interview! I was asked to articulate my reasons for wanting to get an MBA, my future goals and plans, how this schools program fit into my plans etc! The questions were asked very pointedly and not in a conversational manner as I was expecting a first time info session would be. I may have broken a sweat and am sure some of my answers were stammered out as I had not prepared for an interview or thought about these things fully.
The entire one on one was conducted by an admissions officer and I wouldn't say it was informal or very casual at all! Since it was a very hot summer weekend afternoon I almost wore shorts and a t-shirt! I luckily decided to wear at least dress pants and a button-up shirt, but I had gone out late the friday night before and was not at my sharpest!
I wouldn't say it went horrible, but I was not expecting this at all and definitely did not perform at my best. I do not have an application in at this school yet, but the admissions officer asked to keep my resume after the discussion. Although he did not discourage me from applying at all and even said some parts were impressive I would not say that the interview was overtly positive. The officer told me that my background was not particularly unique and that I would need to work to differentiate myself more. The officer also criticized my resume as being poorly formatted and difficult to gain information from. I was told my numbers were in-line with what the school admits.
Even though I was totally caught off guard, I wouldn't say I choked. But I wouldn't say I did much better than get out without making a fool of myself. I thanked the officer and tried to leave it on a positive note, but I left feeling quite ill about the entire situation.
Can someone shed some light on this? What can I do to recover from any damage if there was any? I am hoping my resume does not end up with a big red X on it when I turn in my application.
