Given my recent admission offer this is way overdue, but see below my first interview report for INSEAD. Will be posting the second one - as well as interview reports for MIT Sloan and Wharton - one day at a time.

I met with a senior politician alum who, understandably, had a busy schedule. The interview was quick - 30-35 minutes max. - and he hit me with a lot of questions in rapid succession.

There was nothing unexpected or any questions that I had not practiced from the many free resources out there. I was able to get him to talk about himself for at least one-third of the interview; this is a good tactic for alum interviews given everyone likes talking about themselves, right!?

My responses felt calm and well-timed and injected with passion and references to INSEAD, resources, alums etc. After so much prep, they felt a bit rehearsed to my ears, but then I had so little time to say what I needed to it was so helpful to have practised giving precise and concise answers with my consultant, friends and other alums.

My interviewer ended the interview by springing up from his chair and saying thanks for coming (I think he saw the time somewhere). He wished me the best of luck and asked me to keep him informed how it went. We even managed to trade one last story on the walk to the door - every second counts!

On reflection, I wasn't absolutely sure how to read the interviewer's reactions. He seemed to question everything I said but I felt confident I had got my key messages across and ...most importantly ...was normal, likeable and energetic.

One of my interviews was very smooth, she was very nice. The other, the guy was confronting me alll the time. It was very unpleasant, at one time he asked me if I did get better grades at univerisity because I was dumb or lazy? I gave him a flaw , and he answered thats not a flaw, so find me a new one. And this was the tone for the whole interview, always completing my answers or contradicting them, so I guess a ding for me. at the most WL. Besides my AO is IR and I am based in Southern Europe so I think I would have got the call by now...

No news today... I am quite sad since Insead is my top choice...

Come on! You can still receive the call. I also had a good and a bad cop: my first interview was very conversational and the second one much more demanding . The school knows there will be differences between the interview reports and will be able to read through them.
And in any case, if you were interviewed, that is a sign that the school likes your profile. Again, you can still get into.

Of course I still hope so. But I didn´t really send my message. The best in my profile is my job, he didnt even want to listen about it. I hadnt even sat down he was already saying first thing you have to explain why you changed universities. Didnt ask about my gmat, which is probably stronger than his. Only wanted to know wbout the bad stuff in my application. He interviewd me in my native language, english and french. He was looking for ways to ding me. I think I have a strong profile, one good interview and one very bad one. I may get in, but it seemed he didn´t want me to.

BTW, I see a lot of admitted applicants that have also applied to Berkeley Haas (like myself): what do you plan on doing with the payment deadline for Insead (Jan 9) and the notification deadline of Berkeley Haas (Jan 15)? will you withdraw your application from Berkeley Haas? I'm a little concerned

Hi. I got my official admit email today and it includes reference to a 'Careers Kick Off' event on campus on Saturday 22 August in Singapore and on Sunday 23 August in Fontainebleau.

I presume this marks the official start of school but you might have to ask your AO to confirm to be sure!

My second interviewer was around my age. We met on a Saturday and it was very relaxed (he came in jeans and a sweat top, compared to my suit and tie!) and instantly put me at ease.

We had a friendly discussion with - of course - my well thought out responses interspersed with a lot of questions about the school and his experiences there.

We weaved about a bit with the questions as it was a more natural conversation than my first interview. When I sat down my interviewer told me he was in training for [a major local sporting event] so we started off talking about sports.

We soon steered back on to more familiar ground:

- What are my short- and long-term goals?
- Why am I applying now (noted that I will be in the older category)?
- Which campus was I planning to study on?
- How do my family feel about it?
- What's the alternative plan if I don't get in?

There was no problem to get my greatest hits into the discussion. My interviewer also commented on my drive, creative mindset (didn't think I was a finance guy) and that I was a good fit for the school culture. He pretty much told me that he would give me a strong endorsement for admission.

All in all, the interview was very relaxed and there were no "Tell me about a time..." type questions. He seemed to genuinely want to see if I was the sort of guy who would fit the INSEAD culture.

We joked a bit about the type of people applying to other business schools, and he seemed pleased I was not applying anywhere else (in Europe at least - I did not reveal the U.S. applications and he didn't press it!).
