INSEAD profile evaluation  [#permalink]

Hello everybody,

I am inclined to apply to INSEAD this year for the September'19 intake batch. I would love to get your comments on my profile and how should I position it in the INSEAD essays, below are the details -

Indian male, an engineer by education, 28y now - 29y at the time of admission (if admitted)
Education - Top IITs - GPA 8+ (out of 10) - translates to 3.9 (out of 4)
Work -
2y FinTech consulting across SE Asia
2y my own FinTech startup - raised money from US, executed in India
1.5y strategy team of a bulge bracket Financial Markets bank
1.5y (present role) working for a VC firm managing consumer internet & fintech investments - plan to work here till (and if) I get an admit

Goal -
Long term : VC investment (early & growth stage investments)
Short term: not sure, either Business Owner (work for a big firm in business owning roles) or VC

I am not sure (and would love your advice) of the following -
1. Should I claim myself as a FinTech guy or would that become too specific (read: less diversified) in the Insead app?
2. In my short term goal, should I mention investment role or execution role? I am concerned because -
2.1. Investment role would raise the questions on the need for MBA as I am already in an investment role
2.2. Investment role would raise the questions as none of the investment firms recruit on campus and that might be a red flag
2.3. Typically, people do not move from Investment to Operation role, I would have to explain this stand if I mention that as a short term goal

Would love your views on fine-tuning the story to maximize my chance. Thanks.

Also, on a separate note, would love to know which other schools should I think about?

That is a good GPA, but no need to convert it to a scale of 4. Also, what GMAT score are your expecting? Big part of your profile.
Work -
2y FinTech consulting across SE Asia
2y my own FinTech startup - raised money from US, executed in India
1.5y strategy team of a bulge bracket Financial Markets bank
1.5y (present role) working for a VC firm managing consumer internet & fintech investments - plan to work here till (and if) I get an admit
Though the work ex looks interesting on paper, especially the entrepreneurship bit, but my friend what is the content of this work ex. In a post where your focus is on getting answers to the right stories, you have not mentioned the story in the first place. What did you do in these years in terms of achievements, business impact, career progression and international experience (if any). INSEAD is more interested in this than your role/responsibilities. You can read hereto see all factors that count in admissions at INSEAD.

Goal -
Long term : VC investment (early & growth stage investments)
Short term: not sure, either Business Owner (work for a big firm in business owning roles) or VC
You are looking at growing within your existing field- that will help make the whole deal more realistic and organic. However, showcase a story that to reach your long term goal (say 10 years) what role do you need as a stepping stone for the next 3-5 years? Now tell how you cannot reach this role without an MBA from INSEAD, as you may have learnt a lot, but may have some missing gaps that you want INSEAD to fill.

2.3. Typically, people do not move from Investment to Operation role, I would have to explain this stand if I mention that as a short term goal
Answers to all these come from going a bit more in detail in your work ex story and then through your goals. As mentioned to reach your long term goal, what are the roles that you would need to work in? Can you reach these roles without an MBA? Then you may not need it. If you do need an MBA, and INSEAD cannot help you get these roles, then it is a bad choice for you. Rather than it red flagging your application, you should be red flagging the school if it cannot help you reach your goals. You could add a bit more to your research by reading here

Would love your views on fine-tuning the story to maximize my chance. Thanks.

Also, on a separate note, would love to know which other schools should I think about?
The right schools will depend on your 'qualitative' profile, career goals. Selecting to speculate schools based on this limited info.
Also, one would need to asses the overall strength by looking at your expected GMAT (missing), extracurricular activities (missing) and quality of work ex+career goals (both work ex and goals go hand in hand)
