Great job on the analysis bucoloco. This is very helpful info. I am wondering about your thoughts re: better average salary for INSEAD in tech. Was the difference offset by other factors? would you attribute that to the "net-IT" factor - as explained in your note? it does concern me a bit because INSEAD sends grads into areas with a very low cost of living, maybe more so than LBS.

Hi all,

I received offers from INSEAD and Cambridge and expect an offer from LBS. However, I can't make my mind whether I should join LBS or INSEAD.

Background:
German Strategy Consultant (4 YOE) with focus on IT Strategy
Bachelor and Master in IT
Experience with Software companies and IT providers (mostly banking)

Goal:
Senior Executive (IT) e.g. CIO of tech or fintech company
Location wise long long term in Germany, until then anything is possible (US, Zurich, London, Dublin etc.)

Which one would you choose and why?

Congratulations! I think LBS is better for your goal. Here is the framework that I used. I just pulled some numbers from the employment reports of LBS (2019) and INSEAD (2018).

1. Tech Placements

All Tech Placements:
INSEAD: 17%
LBS: 20%

Net Tech Placements:
INSEAD: 8%
LBS: 17%

Remarks:
-net tech placement = all tech placement - % tech pre-MBA
-37% of LBS internships are in the Tech sector (8% in fintech).
-INSEAD tech sector includes: E-Commerce / Internet / Media / Entertainment & Advertising, Information Technology / Telecommunication; Media+Entertainment+Advertising is 7% of the tech sector

2. Target Location

All Europe Placements:
INSEAD: 50%
LBS: 67% (53% in UK)

Net Europe Placements*:
INSEAD: 12%
LBS: 32% (42% for UK)

*Remarks:
-These placements data are for all sectors.
-net Europe placement = all Europe placement - % European in class

3. Financial Returns

INSEAD tech salaries
lowest: 61k USD
median: 104k USD

LBS tech salaries
lowest: 39k USD
mean: 97k USD

Remarks:
-These salaries are for tech placements in Western Europe.

I also used the same framework in selecting the schools that I applied to. I actually just submitted my applications to both LBS and INSEAD.

Congratulations again!

Hi Farrell. These tech salaries are specifically for placements in Western Europe. I'm not sure if the "net-IT factor" has a significant effect on the salary difference. Another possible reason is the change in the exchange rate for GBP. I used the figures from the 2019 employment report of LBS and the 2018 employment report of INSEAD, and there was a significant change in the exchange rate of GBP during 2018-2019 (majority of LBS placements have salaries in GBP).

I'll go with LBS unless you are only keen for a 1 year program. Though LBS has a 15 months program in case time to graduate is a concern.

Reasons:
1. London London London!!! I can't emphasise enough. London is a great place for tech right now, especially FinTech. In every career fair at LBS there are multiple tech startups who are all looking to hire MBA graduates for part time and full time roles.
2. LBS's network in tech in EU is very strong. A big portion of the class ends up in tech and most of them within EU. There is a big network of tech professionals in Germany as well. Being part of such a strong network will help with your career goals.

Feel free to reach out if you have any other specific questions.

Cheers,
Sumit (LBS '20 || Easy MBA Admit community)
